This time last year I closed my 30 year chapter with Unilever and was looking forward to exploring new areas and opportunities. Looking back, I was blown away by the amount of time and level of support people were willing to give me and the amazing conversations I had as I worked out what was next. Actually one of the highlights of the year was reconnecting with some of the many people I had lost contact with over the years and the ease with which we picked up old conversations. The other highlights included some amazing walking in the UK with a range of different people which gave me the time to think and reflect. So thank you to all of you who helped me co-create the future. The photo captures the best of last year plus how I feel about the potential of the year ahead. So what does 2024 look like? Co Create Partnership was primarily created to help connect innovative science and technology with market opportunities via great technical communication. Moving forward this year I will be partnering with the Untapped Innovation (untappedinnovation.com) team to create and deliver technical communication workshops and training for R&D teams using the Untapped Innovation "Innovation Gym" framework. The underpinning belief is that people use stories to communicate and the more engaging the story the more effective the communication is. Scientists are primarily good at science (robust experimental design, diligent execution of experimental procedures and rigorous data analysis). However, scientists are rarely trained to communicate their results effectively such that non scientists truly understand and appreciate what their technology can do and why it is exciting. By unlocking the potential of scientists to communicate their science and technology in a more impactful and engaging way we believe Universities, start ups and established companies can significantly increase their return on their R&D investment which ultimately will increase both revenues and margin through highly differentiated products in the market. One of the most exciting things about studying in London was the chance to discover the stories behind amazing brands in Europe 🛍, and the people who've built them 💼. Here are some of my top takeaways in recent London Business School travels and talks featuring some of my favorite brands. 1️⃣ At Milan trek organised by the LBS Retail, Luxury and Consumer Club, I gained a holistic view of trends shaping the retail space from #Valentino, #GoldenGoose, #Yamamay, #Santoni, #EssilorLuxottica, and #McKinsey. 💡A common thread is how #sustainability is a significant strategic priority, influenced by European consumers’ expectations for companies that care about their impact on the planet, government policies, and intrinsic motivations by leaders. I admire that they’re approaching sustainability in an increasingly holistic way— from tracing the sustainability of suppliers, to designing full product experiences with minimal environmental impact, to developing brand stories that encourage circular economy. Interestingly, they’re also working on how to balance these with profitability and accessibility. 2️⃣ Two amazing women leaders also visited school to share about their career journeys. At Women in Business Club | London Business School talk by Chanel’s Leena Nair, I was inspired to learn more about what it took to make Leena’s challenging quadruple career jump, from Unilever CHRO to #Chanel CEO. At Walpole Leaders of Tomorrow masterclass by Jo Dancey of #JoMalone, I was also fascinated by how she grew from roles in finance to general management. 💡 A common thread was the importance of courage and openness. For Leena, it meant, “Always share your ambition, and put your intentions out there, especially with a learning mindset.” For Jo, it meant going after the hard challenges and asking for tough projects. Interestingly, they also shared how important it is to complement this with building a network of mentorship and support for women leaders and #DEI.

Sharing a great speech by the team at Unilever from their win at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity that highlights the importance of understanding brands, people and the importance of creativity. Spoiler: at no stage did I hear any mention of email open or click through rates being the real measurement of success, I know, controversial right! Key takeaways (which is almost a transcript TBH) •Making sure that brands were at the centre of the growth agenda •Making sure the E2E brand experience was superior •Understanding that creativity was at the centre of that •Creativity does build brands and it connects to commerce •And what is the magic to creativity? It’s matchmaking brands with you In conclusion, I’m personally reminded that creativity is important. Creativity can be both artistic, commercial and successful. It’s a reminder that good ideas can be creative ones. It’s a reminder that those in the more rational positions at an organisation, might need a friendly reminder to “get comfortable with being uncomfortable” when it comes to creatives, because creativity is more than open rates in a campaign and it’s more than pretty colours or fonts, it’s the reason for us to believe. This disconnect between stated values and actual practices became particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic.   𝘽𝙧𝙤𝙠𝙚𝙣 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙚𝙨 High-profile tech companies promised to focus on their employees but still implemented significant layoffs despite having substantial financial reserves. Best Buy, for example, emphasized customer-centric values but laid off numerous employees when in-store sales dropped, highlighting the prioritization of immediate financial gains over long-term employee retention.   𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙚𝙦𝙪𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝘾𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙬𝙖𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 Such practices have serious repercussions. While they may provide short-term financial benefits, they erode long-term trust and loyalty among employees and customers.   𝙋𝙖𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙤 𝘼𝙪𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙘 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣: 𝙀𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 To combat centerwashing, companies must undergo a genuine transformation that prioritizes emotional intelligence and stakeholder well-being. 𝟞 𝕂𝕖𝕪 𝕤𝕥𝕣𝕒𝕥𝕖𝕘𝕚𝕖𝕤 𝕥𝕠 𝕖𝕟𝕤𝕦𝕣𝕖 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝔼𝕞𝕠𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟𝕒𝕝 𝕋𝕣𝕒𝕟𝕤𝕗𝕠𝕣𝕞𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟:   𝟭.
