Dr. Anthony Jackson spoke with Daybreak Health CEO Alex Alvarado to discuss the importance of student and staff mental health supports, the positive impact of teletherapy, and how Dr. Jackson’s background in music education prepared him for district leadership. “Our goal is to try to figure out ways to get more and more [mental health] support into the places where we need them. So we have to be innovative. That's why teletherapy works,” says Dr. Jackson. “It has been a tremendous partnership [with Daybreak] that we hope to leverage in the interest of kids as we move forward. Unapologetically, we care about our kids. And so we're going to do whatever is necessary to ensure that they are healthy and whole.” #OneChatham #Teletherapy #MentalHealthMatters #StudentWellBeing #StaffWellBeing #MentalHealth #SuperintendentSeries

(Part 2/2) When a student commits suicide in school, the response is often inadequate. Classmates are left with unanswered questions, and teachers struggle to cope. This silence normalizes dysfunction in schools, perpetuating a toxic environment that affects students and educators alike. By shying away from open discussions about suicide, we: 😨 Stigmatize mental health issues 😨 Fail to provide outlets for students to express pain 😨 Miss opportunities for empathy and bonding between teachers and students 😨 Perpetuate harmful classroom management tactics When done correctly, open conversations about suicide can: 😌 Reduce stigma 😌 Create safe spaces for expression 😌 Foster empathy and community bonds 😌 Inform customised safety plans 😌 Identify triggers affecting the school community Trauma-informed discussions should be led by trained professionals, not classroom teachers. School counsellors, despite being under-utilised and under-resourced, are best equipped to facilitate these conversations. I urge accountability from the MOE regarding school suicides. The current system is unnecessarily stressful, and the PSLE exam is unnecessary. We must prioritise student well-being and reevaluate our education system. Attend the free forum on October 5, 2024, to discuss crafting a future-ready education system for every child. Let's work together to create a safer, more supportive learning environment. Despite the growing demand, more than half of the teachers (53%) feel inadequately equipped to manage wellbeing and mental health issues. In 2023, almost three in four (71%) wellbeing-focused applications identified the need for professional development for educators as the most effective strategy to better support children’s wellbeing. 🧠 It is therefore clear, that equipping educators is crucial for supporting our students’ wellbeing. #Education #TeacherTraining #StudentWellbeing #MentalHealth

I don't think there's ever been a time when wellbeing wasn't a top priority for schools. I doubt any educator would argue that creating a safe space for young people to thrive isn't the most important part of their role. I just think we're just becoming more wellbeing literate. The recommendations are excellent, especially the first one. I fully agree that schools should have greater access to professional development for educators and wellbeing programs for students. However, I believe there is still a bit of work to do regarding the perception of wellbeing programs. They aren't simply there to "fix" a problem. They shouldn't be seen as a reactive measure but rather as a proactive approach to fostering growth, meaning, purpose, and belonging, and strengthening skills like adaptability, agency, collaboration, empathy, purpose, and self-awareness. Thoughts?

🤝 While some of these issues may not impact our Independent Schools Compensation Corporation (ISCC) members on a wide scale, it is important to keep in mind. When #teachers are facing unaddressed #mentalhealth challenges, it can create a negative classroom environment. Imagine trying to make clear and logical decisions or explain something to a child in the midst of feeling #emotional frustration and turmoil. In result, #students may struggle to concentrate and #learn. Do you ever catch yourself reminiscing about the carefree days of childhood, when every moment was an adventure waiting to unfold? I had the pleasure of meeting an extraordinary individual, Marneta Viegas, who has dedicated her career to nurturing these qualities in children through her innovative venture, Relax Kids. When I first met Martneta Viegas, I was drawn to her passion for helping children emotionally and mentally. Her work with Relax Kids not only impacts the lives of countless young ones but also serves as a powerful reminder: within each of us lies an inner child, waiting to rediscover the simple joys and boundless potential of youth. In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle, leaving little room for playfulness and wonder. Yet, just as Marneta Viegas empowers children to prioritize their well-being, we as adults also have the opportunity to reclaim our own sense of joy and vitality. It's never too late to reconnect with ourselves, to pause and remember what truly brings us happiness and fulfillment. Whether it's through mindfulness practices, self-care routines, or simply allowing ourselves to embrace moments of spontaneity, we can reignite the spark of our inner child. By nurturing our own sense of joy and curiosity, we not only enrich our own lives but also become better equipped to support those around us—whether they're young ones in need of guidance or fellow adults seeking inspiration. Join me and my passion to create a world where wellness knows no age limit, and where every individual has the opportunity to thrive and shine bright. #Wellness #RediscoverJoy #InnerChild #PersonalGrowth https://lnkd.in/d6TQx2CC

Love this, Chatham County Schools 💜 #staffwellbeing "Just as the wellbeing of students is a priority, Dr. Jackson emphasizes the significance of supporting the holistic wellness of educators and staff as well. “Probably the biggest challenge that I'm seeing right now is that we have to be as intentional with adult wellbeing as we are with student wellbeing,” says Dr. Jackson. “I believe that if we're going to meet the needs of students, the adults have to be healthy and whole. And for them to be healthy and whole, we've got to be very deliberate about providing pathways and opportunities for them to check in and take care of themselves. So that we can, without apology, ask them to take care of our kids.”
