International Woman's Day and Women's History Month may be more than a month in the past, but it's important for organisations to keep up the activity year long. This is true also of International Men's Day in November. Did you know that this day even exists? Like me when I first heard about IMD, you might be thinking "isn't every day International Men's Day?" Well, International Men’s Day focuses on men’s mental and physical health. You might see some guys growing beards to raise money for prostate cancer charities. That’s called Movember in the UK. While women are celebrating how far we’ve come in March with the whole world backing us for one big day/week/month of energy. In November men are quietly trying to take care of themselves flying below the radar. As a woman, I can't ask men to ally with women for our annual celebrations in March (and every other day of the year) if I'm not an ally for International Men's Day. Does that seem controversial? Or sensible? Or equitable? Or something else? Why are communication, respect and honesty important to women? Communication: this comes down to connection. Making sure we are on the same page can save us stress and anxiety. Respect: This is something that’s difficult to earn and easy to lose. This should be mutual between leaders and employees. Too often managers ego’s get in the way of this. Honesty: if you want someone to give you their time and hard work every day, be upfront. The truth isn’t always easy to face or admit. Leaders make mistakes. Mistakes don’t define someone, it’s how they own them. The right thing is not always the easy thing. Why women? While I think men often want these things too, too many women have found that these are lacking in their previous managers. Today is International Women’s Day… it's a day for support, and a day for action. If you need ideas, read on...   International Women’s Day is deeply personal. That may seem obvious, but the reason why is a bit broader. It is personal to me because it celebrates women’s history... 🌹 Women like my grandmothers who beautifully balanced strong careers and motherhood while serving as an example of what is possible.🌹 🏋♀️ Women like my aunts, cousins, and sister who tirelessly find ways to lift up the women around them through their words and actions. 🏋♀️ ✨ Women like my mother who instilled in me a big vision of who I could be, while celebrating who I was in the moment. ✨ It is personal to me because it encourages the future... for my daughters, for my nieces, and for all the young women who will one day change the world.   Today, let’s turn the celebration into action. Here are three ideas:   1. Engage with Madam President Camp, the #kansascity non-profit building the next generation of female leaders through programs where middle school girls can be safe, celebrated, and limitless. Today is Wear Red day, to kick off Go Red for Women! @GoRedforWomen @AmericanHeartWA.     I am honored to share that I have been nominated as a 2024 Woman of Impact for the American Heart Association (AHA). As one of only 11 nominees in the state of Washington, I am forming a team to make the greatest impact possible on the health of our community. From February 2nd – April 4th, we will be raising much-needed funds for the innovative research and life-saving initiatives of the American Heart Association and the Go Red for Women movement.   This challenge is personally important to me because I’ve seen the devastating effects heart disease has on the women we love. We can't forget that not only is heart disease the number one cause of death for women, it is also the leading cause of pregnancy-associated maternal death in the US. We have to fight back against women’s greatest health threat. Why? Because losing even one woman - one mom, one wife, one daughter, one sister, one friend - is too many.   We are fighting for better representation in medical research. Fighting for equitable access to care and treatments. Fighting to spread lifesaving information. It’s not just about wearing red. It’s not just about sharing heart health facts. It’s about all of us making a commitment to stand together with Go Red for Women in the fight for heart-health equality.   The time is now. When we take a stand and work together, real change is possible.    Are you with me? Over the next several weeks there will be many ways you can help support these efforts.
