Today, on World Suicide Prevention Day, we reflect on the powerful connection between poverty and mental health. Individuals living below the poverty line are twice as likely to experience serious psychological distress, and counties with high poverty rates have suicide rates 1.4 times higher than those with lower poverty rates. At CAP Utah, we understand that the fight for better mental health is also a fight against poverty. By providing essential resources like housing, food, and education, our network is working to lift individuals and families out of poverty, reducing the stress and despair that can lead to tragic outcomes. Together, we can build a stronger, more supportive community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out for help. You are not alone. #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #EndPoverty #MentalHealthMatters #CAPUtah #SupportEachOther

"Poverty casts a shadow over a child’s mental health, and it’s a shadow that can last a lifetime. Effective action from the Government can start to turn this around." Andy Bell We're urging to Government to deliver on its manifesto pledge of a comprehensive and effective child poverty strategy, and this should coincide with a cross-government mental health plan. We know the situation for children growing up in poverty is dire, but there are tangible solutions which could improve families' mental health. We've set out a roadmap of what needs to be done to best support children's mental health over the next parliamentary session ⬇ For more on this roadmap and recommendations for lasting change: ➡https://lnkd.in/ddRf5Qrx #ADualCrisis #PovertyandPoorMentalHealth #MentalHealth #Government #NewGovernment #ChildPovertyStrategy

A Dual Crisis: The hidden link between poverty and children’s mental health - a new joint report by the Centre for Mental Health, the Children and Young People's Mental Health Coalition (CYPMHC) and Save the Children UK explores the impact of poverty and benefit conditionality on families’ mental health. Based on research with parents and children, and a review of the evidence, the report finds that children are being failed by the state’s inability to combat the dual crises of poverty and mental health. Living in poverty has a devastating impact on children’s mental health. Money and mental health are inextricably linked; not having enough money leads to parental stress and guilt, which has a knock-on impact on children over the course of their lives. Poverty's impact on mental well-being: How to breakdown the barriers Poverty transcends mere financial scarcity; it encompasses a broader lack of opportunities crucial for well-being. Those in poverty often encounter systemic hurdles that block access to vital services like healthcare, education, and housing, fueling a perpetuating cycle of disadvantage. Additionally, mental health challenges, exacerbated by unstable housing, financial stress, and social isolation, further amplify the difficulties in escaping poverty. This intricate web of issues highlights the importance of addressing both the financial and structural aspects of poverty to foster real change.
