Switching from adult to pediatric care might seem daunting, but for Jodi, it was an exciting and rewarding change. As a registered technologist, she received on-the-job training that helped her not only learn pediatric protocols but also embrace new skills — like singing to her patients! “The biggest challenge was getting comfortable with being goofy and singing to help kids hold still for their tests,” she said. “Singing through a microphone with other techs, nurses, doctors and even parents around was intimidating at first, but it’s all about making the kids feel safe.” What’s most rewarding? “Kids are so resilient! We’re making a difference in their lives and helping them through their hardest times. The collaboration with physicians and nurses is phenomenal, unlike anything I experienced in the adult world.” Are you interested in making the switch from adult care to pediatrics? Interprofessional colaboration is a learned skill
Our Interprofessional Community Clinic (ICC) provides school and sports physicals for uninsured children in Lake County. RFU community partners identified this as an area of greatest healthcare need, and students from our nursing, medicine, pharmacy, physician assistant, physical therapy programs, and ICC pediatrics faculty provided these services. Thank you for filling a gap in care and empowering patients. #RFUProud

Parents and caregivers! Are you looking for a new pediatrician? Follow these steps to find the right fit for your child: 1. Get Referrals: Ask your current pediatrician or friends and family for recommendations. 2. Research Online: Visit the American Academy of Pediatrics and HealthyChildren.org websites to use the Find a Pediatrician tool. Look for Fellows of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAPs) for qualified professionals. 3. Contact Medical Societies: Reach out to your local or county medical society for referral services to pediatricians in your area. 4. Check Hospitals: If you're near a medical center, community hospital, or teaching hospital, contact their pediatrics department for recommendations. 5. Interview Candidates: Call each pediatrician's office to inquire about their background, training, and office procedures. Consider asking about their hospital appointments, office location and hours, communication policies, and insurance processing. 6. Evaluate Care: Assess the pediatrician's fit for your child's needs based on their responses and your impressions during the interview. Finding the right pediatrician can ensure your child receives the best care. #ChildHealth

Unfilled pediatric residency slots are not just a problem for our practice. They are a loud warning signal for our country: The beginning of what will be a growing, widespread public health crisis in years to come if something doesn’t change. Do you know who some of the lowest paid doctors are in medicine? Pediatricians. And that’s not an employer organization problem, it’s a total payor issue, in both the private commercial and publicly funded insurance spaces. Are children the highest spenders in healthcare? Not by any stretch of the imagination. Yes there are chronically ill children who cost payors money, but the vast majority are physiologically healthy (we’ll save their even more concerning mental health for another time!). But guess what children without equitable, high-quality primary pediatric care eventually become? Expensive, chronically ill adults. And guess who pays for those children? The exact same payor systems that refused to appropriately pay for the level of quality ALL children deserve. Are there opportunities in other specialties for myself and the millions of physicians and APPs out there? Sure. But why should ANY health worker - pediatrician or otherwise - have to defer from the passionate, heartfelt desire to care for some of our most vulnerable citizens, simply because they won’t be able to afford to live, much less pay their medical school loans?! I am so glad this issue is garnering national attention, FINALLY. The way our health and societal systems undervalue pediatricians is abhorrent. Something’s got to give. #pediatrics #pediatricians American Academy of Pediatrics American Medical Association Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSAgov), HHS Primary Care Collaborative

A reduced match for pediatrics as med students shy away from primary care. Another canary in the coal mine. BAD primary care benefits specialists, ERs, hospitals, and insurers, who are adept at promising to cut costs and then blaming providers for their failure. They've been doing it for 45 years, successfully NOT controlling costs as primary care investment has fallen from 9% of the healthcare dollar to it's latest measure at 4.6%. Other nations have 50% of their workforce in primary care. 40% of current medical students hope NOT to do patient care with their degree. The system is cracking at its core, but the profit takers are winning every day. Patients are the losers. And you, too, will be a patient some time sooner or later. What are YOU going to do about this situation?????

The specialist shortage is one of healthcare’s most pressing challenges. Patients wait weeks, sometimes months, for specialized care, and nowhere is this more evident (and concerning) than in pediatrics. This recent Time article highlights how financial disincentives and a declining number of medical students entering pediatric specialties have led to significant shortages. As the article points out, children in need of specialized care are facing lengthy delays, creating a ripple effect that impacts families, primary care providers, and the broader healthcare system. This article highlights how much is at stake, pushing all of us in the healthcare community to think critically about how to close these gaps. We are beyond thrilled to share our partnership with Imagine Pediatrics for #BHT2024! Imagine Pediatrics is a multidisciplinary, pediatrician-led medical group. Their team of board-certified pediatricians, complex care doctors, advanced practice providers, licensed mental health therapists, nurses, pharmacists, and other clinical staff enhance access to medical, behavioral, and social care and support for children with special health care needs and severe mental illness. They don’t replace a child’s existing care team. They partner with them to deliver virtual-first, value-based care that improves patient experiences and outcomes and reduces the total cost of care for this patient population. Imagine Pediatrics partners with families and caregivers before a child presents with a behavioral health concern for prevention — and they provide virtual care and coordination in the home in times of immediate need or crisis. Their goal: to keep pediatric patients safe at home while connecting them with the right level of care as quickly as possible, avoiding escalations and unnecessary emergency department visits. Meet their team by joining us at the largest conference focused on expanding access to autism/IDD, mental health, and substance use care through #technology, #healthequity, and #innovation on November 5th-7th, 2024 in Phoenix, AZ!
