The recovery process does not only contain erosion control measures but also harmonious integration with the natural topography. 🌿 We planted 8,000 saplings on National Afforestation Day, comprising 4,000 Black Pine and 4,000 Cedar trees. 🌳 We remain dedicated to evaluating and reclaiming areas or mines where production has ceased. We prioritize the restoration of these areas. In the picturesque region of Napier, situated in the heart of the fertile Overberg area of South Africa, agriculture has long been the lifeblood of the community. Wheat and canola fields stretch as far as the eye can see, providing sustenance, livelihoods, and a deep sense of connection to the land. However, a looming possibility threatens the balance that has been maintained for generations: the prospect of mining. https://lnkd.in/dwf7phht

In Ghana, illegal small-scale gold mining (galamsey) has destroyed thousands of hectares of forests and cocoa farms, resulting in a landscape stripped of all trees and plants. Mined areas also pose risks to #cocoa farms because soil removal can lead to erosion or even the collapse of neighbouring lands. Downstream water bodies often show high levels of pollution, which makes the water unsuitable for those who depend on it for drinking water, washing, and irrigating their crops. In 2023, after consulting local communities, we started restoring illegal mining sites in the Nsokote district by preparing 16 hectares of land in Dinkyiea for #reforestation. The restoration process: 📐 Levelling the land 🌦 Creating optimal drainage 🌿 Planting nitrogen-fixing vegetation ⬇️ Allowing the soil to settle and stabilise for a year 🌳 Planting native tree species The first 4 steps have now been completed, and in a year, when the ground is stable enough to support their root systems, we will begin the process of planting native #trees.
