Joe Smith, CEO/founder of 1754 Properties, which owns downtown Tampa's Hotel Flor, part of the Hilton Tapestry Collection, and the Tradewinds Resort on St. Pete Beach, cited the following advantages the Tampa Bay region has over other travel destinations:
- Corporate relocations (e.g. Pfizer, in Tampa, CodeBoxx in St. Pete etc.) increase business demand
- Tampa International Airport expansion (to be completed in 2028) enhances connectivity and attracts more business and leisure travelers
- Lack of vacation alternatives in the Middle East and Europe: St. Pete
Beach recognized as #1 Beach in the U.S., #5 worldwide (TripAdvisor 2021)
- Constrained supply of new hotels, driven by high interest rates, high price expectations from owners, limited investment alternatives and minimal ownership changes, create a robust hotel market as demand exceeds supply.
He also noted concerns regarding cruise ship competition, customer financial constraints and high hotel property prices.
