📢 New Viewpoint Published! We're excited to share that CHOPR Fellow Kathy Sliwinski and Dr. Allison Squires have published a compelling viewpoint in the #AmericanJournalofNursing. 🔍 Key Insights: Nearly 26 million people in the U.S. have limited English proficiency (LEP), impacting their healthcare experiences and outcomes. LEP individuals face increased risks like difficulty understanding discharge instructions, longer hospital stays, and unplanned ED revisits. Capturing language preference in research can reveal critical health disparities and inform better healthcare policies and practices. 🔗 Read More: https://bit.ly/LEPResearch #Healthcare #NursingResearch #HealthEquity #LanguageBarriers #AJN #CHOPR #PennNursing #Nurses4All

Please be sure they know that you need near native fluency to communicate complex medical information to patients. It’s lovely to be able to engage in basic communication with your patients in their native language. When engaging in history-taking, sharing a difficult diagnosis, or discussing critical patient education, best practice is to ALWAYS use a trained medical interpreter.

You’ve been given medication to treat your stomach ailment; however, your first language isn’t English, and you can’t understand the prescription label. What do you do? This is a challenge faced by millions of patients in the U.S. with Limited English Proficiency. Studies have found that among patients who did not speak the local language, nearly 35% experienced confusion about how to use their medication, and almost 16% suffered a bad reaction to the medication due to not understanding the proper usage, reports the Nurse Journal. Dual language/translated labels could be the solution for pharmacists. This low-cost service allows patients to read labels in their preferred language, removing the guesswork and potential for errors. Twenty-five languages are available. 🏥 Healthcare systems purchasing interpretation services focus on cost. Often, it's the number one deciding factor. For the next few weeks, we'll share insights from a conversation between Nate Kuslansky and Katharine Allen. They explore three pillars that healthcare systems should consider when purchasing interpretation services. Cost is one of them. This week's topic: The risk of leveraging bilingual staff as interpreters. Organizations might reduce the need for in-person and on-demand interpreters by leveraging bilingual staff. These bilingual staff members have other organizational roles—like an assistant, nurse, or physician. Unfortunately, this practice isn't always compliant and can lead to operational and clinical bottlenecks. Watch this clip to learn more. We've also linked the full conversation below. 🔗: https://lnkd.in/dhmyfYDT #healthcare #interpreting #languageaccess

Transformative ICU Consultant | Leading Expert in Awake and Walking ICU Models | Acute Care Nurse Practitioner | "Walking Home From the ICU" Podcast
During my visits with ICUs throughout the USA, I am noticing that ICUs only have letterboards available in a few languages. Often times, clinicians don't know where the letterboards are if they do exist on the unit. We are ethically and legally obligated to have interpreters for those that do not speak English. Yet most hospitals do not have tools available for nonverbal non-English communication. This means that intubated non-english speaking patients are deprived of the basic human right of communication. As we see in the studies evaluating disparities in care for Hispanic patients in the ICU, depriving patients access to communication negatively impacts their care and can be lethal. We cannot humanize, customize, and optimize care without communication WITH our patients. This is why I am passionate about VidaTalk as a life-saving intervention to allow access to nonverbal communication in 40 languages. Does your ICU have communication tools for nonverbal and non-english speaking patients? Comment "yes" or "no" below!
