📢 New research led by Margo Brooks Carthon and Ann Kutney-Lee highlights the critical role of nurse work environments in reducing COVID-19 mortality among socially vulnerable Medicare beneficiaries. This study found that up to 585 deaths could have been prevented if hospitals had invested in better nursing resources. Read the full-article here: https://lnkd.in/erqxDNx7 This underscores the importance of supporting nurses to ensure high-quality care, particularly for those from socially vulnerable communities. As we prepare for future public health emergencies, improving nurse work environments must be a priority for hospital administrators and policymakers. 📢 New Research Highlight We’re proud to share that CHOPR’s Karen Lasater has been featured in @pennldi for her study on nurse staffing variations and hospital patient deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic. 🏥 The research, published in the International Journal of Nursing Studies, reveals that many lives could have been saved if hospitals had entered the pandemic with adequate staffing, high-quality work environments, and a workforce rich in Bachelor’s degree-qualified RNs. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed disparities in care, especially in Black-serving hospitals. CHOPR Associate Director, Dr. Eileen Lake and colleagues investigated how these inequities affected nurses and patient outcomes.
In their recent study, LDI Fellows Eileen Lake, Connie Ulrich, and colleagues underscore the impact of leadership communication on the moral distress of nurses during COVID-19 in Black-serving hospitals (BSHs). Their findings revealed that nurses in higher BSHs reported more distress than those in lower BSHs, which was linked to inadequate communication from managers & PPE shortages. 📢COVID-19 Patient Mortality in the Context of Hospitals Chronically Under-Resourced Nursing Services Dr. Karen Lasater, recently spoke at the HealthWatch USA meeting, discussing the relationship between nurse staffing, nurse work environment, educational and skill mix composition on COVID-19 mortality rates. Watch the full presentation on YouTube to learn more: https://lnkd.in/dq6qv_YZ In her presentation, Dr. Lasater delves into findings from newly published research in the International Journal of Nursing Studies: ‘Hospital nurse staffing variation and Covid-19 deaths: A cross-sectional study’, co-authored with Matthew McHugh, PhD, JD, MPH, RN and Dr. Linda Aiken. The research reveals a stark reality that many Covid-19 deaths could have been avoided if hospitals were better resourcing nurses prior to and during the pandemic. 📢 New Viewpoint Published! We're excited to share that CHOPR Fellow Kathy Sliwinski and Dr. Allison Squires have published a compelling viewpoint in the #AmericanJournalofNursing. 🔍 Key Insights: Nearly 26 million people in the U.S. have limited English proficiency (LEP), impacting their healthcare experiences and outcomes. LEP individuals face increased risks like difficulty understanding discharge instructions, longer hospital stays, and unplanned ED revisits. Capturing language preference in research can reveal critical health disparities and inform better healthcare policies and practices. 🔗 Read More: https://bit.ly/LEPResearch #Healthcare #NursingResearch #HealthEquity #LanguageBarriers #AJN #CHOPR #PennNursing #Nurses4All
