The city of Los Angeles just undertook an "affordable" housing field experiment that absolutely confirmed my two big priors around ACTUAL AFFORDABLE housing (meaning low cost as differentiated from "affordable"/subsidized housing^1 ). 1) As we've always known and proven in Houston, if you want ACTUAL AFFORDABLE housing you merely have to allow it. https://lnkd.in/dFPB8cay (LA approved 3 years worth of "affordable" (80% AMI) apartments in 1 year after the policy change) 2) That it is impossible to build ACTUAL AFFORDABLE housing in much of the country is a clear and direct policy decision. https://lnkd.in/g5srWS5B (And immediately turned around and started adding restrictions back on the program) ^1 The most absolutely vulnerable among us will almost certainly still need some assistance but a housing market that is so messed up I might be able to qualify for assistance is a policy choice. #Housing #AffordableHousing

A recent report from the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies highlights how modernizing building codes can unlock new development opportunities in land-constrained localities, increase housing supply, and reduce housing costs. Thanks to the efforts of Senator Schuyler VanValkenburg and Delegate Adele McClure, Virginia is working towards similar building code reforms to address the Commonwealth's housing challenges. #Housing https://lnkd.in/eEh66np7 Home Builders Association of Virginia, National Association of Home Builders, Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development

"New state legislation like Senate Bill 4 has streamlined developing affordable housing on church-owned properties by overriding local zoning restrictions and expediting the permitting process." These projects are proof that with deepened investments to create and preserve affordable housing, prevent homelessness, and strengthen protections, we can change the landscape of affordable housing for the region. Rich NJ city turns down affordable housing development to build pricey apartments "🏙️🏠 A tale of two cities: While some communities are fighting for affordable housing, others are turning it away for luxury apartments. The wealthy town of Englewood Cliffs, NJ has rejected a proposal for affordable housing, choosing instead to build expensive apartments. This decision speaks volumes about the priorities of our society. Affordable housing is a basic human right, and it's disheartening to see it being disregarded for profit. Let's demand that our cities prioritize the needs of all residents, not just the wealthy few. #AffordableHousingNow #HousingEquality #SocialJustice #EnglewoodCliffs #LuxuryVsNecessity"

For New England communities strapped for housing supply, data from the NZA and partner HousingWorks RI at RWU suggests large minimum lot sizes are a policy choice worth renegotiating: In Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire, data derived from completed state zoning atlases reveal minimum lot size requirements skew 1 acre or larger. What does this mean for the state of housing at large? A new story reported by The Public's Radio 89.3 FM delves into the consequences of limiting housing development on large swaths of land: https://lnkd.in/dt8AuuRu “It's not to say that all of a particular town has to look like an urban center. But where is it more appropriate? Where are you able to up-zone to accommodate some growth? At some point the people who live there now are going to be gone. And how have you attracted new and young people into a space to create some continued vibrancy is something I think we have to contemplate,” says Melina Lodge, executive director of Housing Network of Rhode Island.

I think combining services with people that need said services is extremely important. Mixed use areas can be of benefit as multiple groups of people can utilize the space and get access to services they may not normally have access to. Affordable housing has been a popular topic as of late. I think it is important for people to be able to afford their housing as well as other necessities of life. It is crucial that people have services that help them maintain housing and prevent homelessness.
#MercyHousingNorthwest community Gardner House and the Allen Family Center in #Seattle is just one example of fusing of services and housing and can be the key in getting more #AffordableHousing built. Fast Company talks with Colin Morgan-Cross about the successes of creating a home for services for residents and the community at large.

Housing diversity in every neighbourhood. Yes, please! Sacramento City Council has unanimously adopted the Missing Middle Housing Interim Ordinance, becoming the first in California to allow multi-unit housing in all single-family neighbourhoods. It allows four-plexes, six-plexes, eight-plexes, ten-plexes cottage/bungalow courts, small homes on small lots and more, with the size of the building determined by the lot size and proximity to public transit. Core principles of the planning reform are:- neighbourhood scale (enabling them to blend well into existing residential neighbourhoods), trees and open space (as incentives to advance climate goals) and attainability and ownership (promoting the creation of new entry-level home ownership opportunities). Well done California YIMBY for never giving up YIMBY Qld #abundanthousing #housingforall #urbanplanning https://lnkd.in/gyq6CT54
