Last year, we began advocating for the establishment of innovative public charter high schools, similar to Greenville Technical Charter High School, called Workforce Centers of Excellence, across our state’s 16 technical colleges. This year, we will continue our advocacy efforts with Gov. Henry McMaster and the General Assembly on behalf of South Carolina’s families to ensure their students graduate workforce-ready from day one. As we enjoy parades, BBQs, and fireworks, let's remember the deeper significance behind the festivities. These ideals challenge us to continually strive for a more perfect union, acknowledging both our achievements and the work that remains. Frederick Douglass once questioned what the Fourth of July meant to the American slave, revealing the gap between American ideals and reality. Today, it's crucial for us to pause and ask what the Fourth of July means to us. How can we better align our practices with our principles? This Fourth of July, let's draw inspiration from the global celebrations of our Independence Day and commit to living up to the noble aspirations of our founding documents. It's an opportunity for each of us to reflect on the role we can play in forming a more perfect union.
