They were at a different company and our opportunities didn't align. That was clear from the jump. But we both valued relationships and chose to stay connected. Now? They’re at different company, with different opportunities, and the ability to influence decision-making. This year's crewman is next year's superintendent. And you'll need a favor from them on a job site. This year's project engineer is next year's project manager. And they’ll be buying out a job you're pursuing. Being a foreman on site means you are responsible for at least 3 important things. You need to make sure the work gets done, tell your project manager how things are going, and, most importantly, keep your crew safe. Lets focus on reporting your progress to your project manager. Ideally you will be running daily huddles. The best time to do it is first thing in the morning. Sometimes you have an app that will let you record what was discussed – sometimes you write it down – and sometimes, you just wing it and just keep it safe in your head! At the end of the day, you should think about what you did. This is your chance to say if things went well, if nobody got hurt, if any visitors came, if anything took longer than expected, or if anything surprising happened. If something surprising happened, it's good to send a quick message to your project manager or the safety manager so they can help. But after everything is okay, you'll still have some paperwork to do. Hopefully you have an app that makes this daily job easy and quick. You should be able to check in at the start of the day, say who's there, and then, at the end of the day, answer a few simple questions, add some details if needed, and then say you're done. It's even better if you can put in any unexpected stuff at the end of the day too. Relying on texts and emails, maybe taking pictures and attaching is great – But that can be risky for the company that pays you and takes care of you. For a lot of people sitting behind at a desk all day isn't for them. Get to know our VP Of Operations: Sean Hansen! How Did Your Career In Construction Start And How Has It Shaped Your Views Of Construction Safety? "I have been connected to construction since I was a kid, my dad was a superintendent. When I was in middle school and high school, I started getting to follow him to work now and again. That was my initial exposure to the construction industry. After college, I was looking to start my career so I fell back on my construction knowledge. I started working as a union laborer and it has evolved since then. I went from being a union laborer to a Project Engineer, then Assistant Superintendent, Superintendent, Field Operations Manager, Director of Construction and now I am the VP of Operations for Technical Builders. In terms of how that has shaped my views of safety: having been someone who started their career in the field getting dirty and doing the work, gives you firsthand exposure to what a safe job site feels like and what a job site that's not safe feels like. It's a significant and impactful difference. So I have always strived, since the beginning, to create job site environments that allow people to feel safe. And when your workers and team feel safe on the job site, that's when you get the best from them. I think that my firsthand experience is what has shaped my perspective on safety. Needing to take grasp of current claims, projects, and meeting the entirety of the team and beginning relationships with them. A typical day will start early, ensuring availability when current projects begin. Creating schedules and plans to review with the CEO, to ensure I have a proper office to field balance. Collaborating with all departments of the business, and networking with our client’s safety teams. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗮 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿? As I step into the role of safety director at Ascendent, I will be responsible for creating safety policies, identifying hazards, training employees, investigating accidents and incidents, making sure rules are followed, encouraging safety through various techniques, planning for emergencies, and working with others throughout the organization to ensure health and safety principles are always improving. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻/𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻/𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆? I started construction at a young age as a laborer for a small excavation company. This was followed by moving into small commercial demolition. In June of 2010, I joined Envirocon, and was initially dispatched to a dam demolition and dredging project. This gave me experience in industrial demolition and HAZWOPER work. From there, I moved up the ranks, becoming an equipment operator, followed by crew lead and foremen, and eventually a site supervisor. I joined Envirocon’s health and safety team in 2016, and since then have worked with a few other demolition contractors in both the industrial and commercial demolition and abatement world. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗝𝗼𝗯 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆? I chose a career in safety because of a very serious near-miss I was involved in during my career - an event that could have been prevented. I told myself I wanted to ensure nothing like this could ever happen to others as long as I had something to do about it. 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘛𝘸𝘰!
