For the 10 days, we're shining a spotlight on the founding stories of France's top companies. On our sixth day, we delve into the remarkable history of Saint-Gobain, a company whose journey began in the reign of Louis XIV. Once upon a time in 1665, in the land famed for its fashion, cuisine, and art, Saint-Gobain emerged not from a palace of Versailles' decree, but from a need to outshine Italian mirror manufacturers. King Louis XIV, desiring the grandeur of the most reflective mirrors for his Hall of Mirrors, spurred the foundation of the Manufacture royale de glaces de miroirs. This venture was not just about vanity; it was about national pride and technological sovereignty. The company's early days were marked by intrigue and innovation. Luring Venetian glassmakers to France under the cloak of night, Saint-Gobain began producing mirrors that rivaled, then surpassed, the beauty of Venetian pieces. Yet, this wasn't a smooth process. Imagine the challenges of keeping Venetian artisans focused in the lively city of Paris, and the logistics of securing enough firewood for the furnaces! From these thrilling beginnings, Saint-Gobain didn't just rest on its laurels. It evolved, navigating through centuries of industrial revolution, wars, and technological advancements. Today, Saint-Gobain stands as a global leader in construction and building materials, having diversified far beyond mirrors into producing a variety of high-performance materials. Saint-Gobain's legacy is a testament to the enduring spirit of innovation, adaptability, and the pursuit of excellence—a true reflection (pun intended) of French ingenuity. As we celebrate over 350 years of Saint-Gobain's contributions to the world, let's remember that behind every pane of glass lies a story of ambition, craftsmanship, and a touch of royal intrigue. I could not wait to share this beautiful article on Vogue today about Annabelle, her work, personal insight, and the firm. I hope you enjoy the intricate details of her work that are spotlighted in this article as much as I did!
We are thrilled to share that Vogue has featured Annabelle Selldorf in this year’s September issue. Thank you to Vogue, Anna Wintour, Annie Leibovitz and Dodie Kazanjian for this incredible profile which starts with a hard-hat tour at the soon-to-be completed The Frick Collection, travels to a tiny island in Maine where Annabelle spends her downtime, and insightfully captures what distinguishes Annabelle’s humanist and sensitive design instinct. In addition to the Frick the article discusses other current major projects including the National Gallery London, One Domino Square, and the Château Haut-Brion winery in Bordeaux. Some palaces possess an immense potential to captivate the eye with their grandeur. Yet, amidst their splendor, some pillars seem to forget their role as mere supports for the structure. It's important to recognize that it's the palace itself that leaves a lasting impression on people, not the individual pillars. When the pillars begin to falter or lose their straightness, the entire palace is at risk of collapse, making it essential to consider refurbishment. It would be sheer idiocy to dismiss the notion that pillars can't be replaced with stronger ones. Better for them is to be the stewards of the palace's beauty and share in the praises that passersby bestow upon it. PS: Of course, each pillar is a work of art in its own right. However, like any masterpiece, it requires the right setting to truly shine.
