Max Bergmann will moderate our discussion with Georgetown's Daniel Kelemen. The book explores the rise of right-wing populist parties in postcommunist countries over the last two decades, often at the expense of previously successful center-left parties that had rebranded as pro-market following the collapse of communism in the region. Using various levels of analysis, the book argues that scholars must incorporate economic factors when explaining the collapse of support for left-wing parties and the rise of their rivals on the populist right. Additionally, it claims that the supposed uniqueness of this process in Eastern Europe has been overstated, with parallel processes playing out in historically Western countries as well. https://lnkd.in/eRXPErCZ

It is with considerable pride that I announce our research paper's recognition as one of the most cited works in the "Scottish Journal of Political Economy", (ABDC-A). The paper has garnered significant attention, not only academically but also on various platforms including The Atlantico (in French), Wiley Kudo, and VoxEU, showcasing its broad impact and relevance. While the Western media is critical of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, some nations have adopted Putin’s alternative narrative. Information and public beliefs consequently also vary. This paper analyses a large cross-country sample of Facebook posts to compare public sentiment with official government stances. There is greatest divergence within Asian and African countries, and a nation’s trading relationship with Russia plays a vital role in shaping sentiment about the war. The textual analysis provides a means to assess public sentiment, which is an important determinant of the outcomes and policy response to a crisis. I extend my deepest gratitude to my co-authors for their substantial contributions to this work. Niall Ferguson joined us last week at Adam Smith's Panmure House, giving a lecture touching on the legacy of Adam Smith, classical liberalism, and the future of globalization. A key focus of his lecture and our conversation after was the relative convergence of China with the standards of living enjoyed in the West. The West took off well before the industrial revolution whereas China remained in a steady state until very recently. That story is well known. But the overarching question that Niall left us with was whether the West, at least many parts of it in Europe and the United Kingdom, are entering into a steady state (read diminishing standards of living!). There is an economic geography angle here where regions outside the metropoles are lagging. But this is of little consolation for the big cities, because they don’t exist on islands all their own. Our conversation after the lecture touched on a range of topics, including a discussion of whether China’s growth has peaked and how it will handle a major financial crisis in its bloated real estate sector. We also discussed the recent election in Argentina and whether Milei’s libertarian reforms, assuming he can implement them, will change the direction of the Argentine economy, an economy that once was one of the richest in the world. It will be an interesting experiment to watch.
