Late 2022, the government of Canada increased the minimum charitable spending rate from 3.5% to 5%. If fully implemented by foundations, that would increase charitable expenditures by $200m a year. Some foundations are struggling to meet the new rate, while others have been spending 5% as the norm. Those struggling, include smaller foundations. Some foundations argued a higher rate would jeopardize the ability for foundations to remain in perpetuity to support their communities. Counter to this, others argued that foundations existing in perpetuity should not be the norm, and the priority should be addressing nationwide pressing social, economic and environmental challenges. According to the head of Philanthropic Foundations Canada / Fondations philanthropiques Canada, a group of foundations are struggling to meet the higher rate of charitable spending the federal government introduced last year. In response to a sustained advocacy campaign, the federal government introduced the new rate in late 2022 to increase the amount of money flowing to the charitable sector. ✨WHY IT MATTERS✨ 2023 was the first year some foundations were forced to increase their charitable spending. Imagine Canada estimated this change would result in an additional $200 million annually in charitable expenditures — but only if foundations follow the rules. Really interesting report by The Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) about Corporate giving. Mobilising greater funds from corporates could be transformative to the charity sector and wider society however this is not the trend. Some highlights: - If all companies gave at least 1% of pre-tax profits, charities could receive an extra £5 billion a year. - Beyond the FTSE 100, 75% of UK businesses did not support charities in 2023. - Adjusted for inflation, this represents a decline of 8.3% year on year. - Total donations by the FTSE 100 fell slightly to £1.82 billion in 2023. - Over the last decade, FTSE 100 donations have declined 34% in real terms. - Healthcare is the most generous FTSE 100 sector, contributing 22.9% of total donations. #corporateresponsibility #corporategiving #socialimpact #philanthropy #corporatepartnerships #FTSE100 #CAF

Unlocking the Power of Generosity: Key Insights into Canadian Fundraising Did you know that Canada is home to nearly 86,000 registered charities? Out of these, 77,017 are actively shaping our communities every day. But what's even more impressive is the financial snapshot of generosity across the nation: $18.7 Billion in official donation receipts were issued by these charities. A staggering $304 Billion in total revenue was reported last year alone. Charities also received $2.9 Billion from international donors, showcasing global confidence in Canadian causes. However, a trend stands out: Online giving is on the rise. Each leap in donations often aligns with responses to global crises or disaster relief efforts, highlighting Canadians' reactive strength and compassion. As we navigate the evolving landscape of philanthropy, these figures underscore the impact of charitable organizations and the unwavering spirit of donors. Charities unite against Alternative Minimum Tax changes — but at what long-term cost? Trust in charities is declining. Some worry a recent campaign could threaten it further, leading to lower #donations in the long run. “The short-term issue is how to protect the charitable sector. The long-term issue is how to protect the philanthropic sector’s reputation,” said Karel Mayrand, CEO of the Foundation of Greater Montreal. I'm interested to see what the Department of Finance projects the loss to charitable organization to be from the AMT proposed changes. For charities against the AMT proposed changes...comparing that figure to the potential 2.6 billion this will bring in taxes over 5 years is the only way to make a data-driven assessment vs a fear based one. Ultimately giving should be an altruistic practice, regardless of the tax incentives. With the tax bracket this is affecting, money is there to give if they believe in the work and want to support it.

Australians are wonderfully generous 💞, and the not-for-profit sector benefits from it. According to McCridle's data of 2024, four in five Australians, or 84%, have given financially to charities or not-for-profits. It shows that there are over 59,000 registered charities that employ 1.42 million people and have an estimated 3.2 million volunteers in Australia. 75% of Australians give annually, and 24% give monthly. The interesting shift is from regular giving to spontaneous need-driven giving. This can be influenced by the fact that older generations prefer established charities while Gen Z favours start-up disrupters. Gen Y is the most neutral on giving to a start-up (44%) or an established charity (56%). NEW: All levels of government announced new funding for the charitable sector during the pandemic. But how much did organizations net in total? And is the boost in funding here to stay? New data released by CRA last week show that between 2019 and 2021, total transfers from Canadian governments to the charitable sector increased by $30 billion — from $199 billion in 2019 to $228 billion in 2021. Was the increase a blip, or is the additional funding here to stay? #charities #philanthropy #funding https://lnkd.in/gE8_a5nv
