On April 10th, The Global Institute on Innovation Districts and its Founder, Julie Wagner, will release a research paper, “Innovation Districts and the Centrality of Land.” The landscape of urban innovation is evolving rapidly, with more than 150 innovation districts emerging globally in just a few decades. This creates the misconception that designing and executing these districts is an easy and fast endeavor. This is the opening observation of the paper, which details the level of strategy involved in developing successful innovation districts and their fragile ecosystems. Building on extensive research and practice, the paper focuses on the centrality of land in realizing the ambitions of innovation districts. Rather than viewing land as an avenue for “real estate plays,” forward-thinking districts view land as an enabler for advancing ambitious goals such as the design of tailored spaces for multi-disciplinary problem solving or a talent-development pipeline to link residents to district jobs. Look for this paper on April 10, as we will release it on social media with the support of magazines and newspapers in many countries and cities.

I am really happy to share a new paper published in the journal Sustainable Cities and Society (Q1, IF=11.7), entitled The challenges of high-quality development in Chinese secondary cities: a typological exploration. In this paper, my supervisors Roberto Rocco and Rodrigo Viseu Cardoso and I explored the typology of Chinese secondary cities facing the intra-regional unevenness problem. We used the TOPSIS evaluation method and K-means clustering analysis to achieve our goals and five types of secondary cities emerge as a result. Each type has distinguished characteristics regarding the development gaps with the core cities in multiple dimensions. This is the first systematic classification of Chinese secondary cities and our findings built up a solid foundation for regional unevenness research and target policy making. My following-up research will also be based on such typology. I am planning to do case studies of each type of secondary cities to understand better on the intra-regional unevenness in Chinese mega-regional system. Check if you are interested, and all comments, questions, and doubts are welcomed. Also, if you are also doing secondary city’s research, I am looking forward to the further cooperation. https://lnkd.in/errQXG_y

🌿 Find here the latest publication by Arjen Buijs and colleagues on improving uptake of Nature-based Solutions into urban development practice! 🏙 The paper sheds light on the integration of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in urban areas across Europe and Latin America. While NbS holds promise for creating sustainable and climate-resilient cities, effective implementation faces challenges. This research highlights the crucial role of governance and monitoring & assessment (M&A) processes in improving NbS adoption. It finds that M&A can enhance political commitment and collaborative efforts, and that there's an untapped potential in collaborating with non-governmental actors to contribute to these processes. 🤝 This study emphasizes the necessity of engaging civil society in M&A, fostering awareness and participation in these processes. By considering the different socio-economic and cultural contexts of European and Latin America cities, a wider range of practitioners’ experiences in different governance settings is included. These insights offer valuable perspectives for practitioners aiming to advance NbS implementation and unlock the potential of NbS in shaping sustainable urban futures. 👉 Find the article here: https://lnkd.in/eEGazzUG
