🚀 Advancing research in remote indigenous communities Our Remote Indigenous Communities Research Team is making great progress on two key projects focusing on developing sustainable solutions for water and energy security in remote communities: 1️⃣ Building Water Security and Climate Resilience in Remote Indigenous Communities in the Torres Strait and Cape York Peninsula (TCICA) 🌊🌱 2️⃣ iKnow, weKnow: Co-Designing a Resilient Water and Energy Toolbox for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Communities (ARC LP), a #FallingWalls #GlobalCall24 #ScienceEngagement #Top20 shortlisted project. ⚡🤝 The three-year, Australian Research Council-funded #iKnowWeKnow project is wrapping up its first year! We're gathering vital baseline data on water and energy and collaborating with communities, industry partners, and stakeholders to create innovative tools for demand management and climate resilience. 🌿⚡ Meanwhile, the ‘Building Water Security…’ project is halfway through fieldwork, with data analysis already starting, fuelled by insights from engaged communities. 📊🤝 Thank you to our government, industry and community partners who support the #iKnowWeKnow project - we couldn't do it without you! 🧣 The Climate Scarf: A creative call for action ❤️ Meet Sara Gerdsen, a participant in Griffith University’s Ethos research project, who’s turning climate data into wearable art! 🌏🎨 Sara has been busy knitting Climate Scarves—each one uniquely designed with colorful stripes representing global surface temperatures over the past 100 years. Every row tells a story of our warming world. Inspired by the #KnitForClimateAction movement, these scarves are more than just winter accessories. They’re a nationwide initiative to raise awareness and spark climate action. The goal? To gift them to thought leaders and influencers, turning them into symbols of our shared responsibility to tackle climate change. 🧶✊ Sara’s beautiful scarves have already been gifted to members of the Ethos research team, spreading the message of urgency and hope for our planet. 🌱💚 Want to get involved (or have an older parent or friend who would)? 🏠 SEQ housing crisis: Hidden impacts on our waterways As Southeast Queensland plans to build nearly 900,000 new homes by 2046, Associate Professor Andrew Brooks is sounding the alarm on a critical, yet often overlooked, issue: the environmental toll on the Brisbane River catchment. 🌊🏞️ A recent audit by Healthy Land & Water revealed a troubling fact—only 15% of construction sites are meeting erosion sediment control standards. The consequences? Increased sediment from these sites is threatening #Brisbane's drinking water supply, especially during dry years and catastrophic floods. 🌧️💧 Since 2011, Brisbane’s largest water treatment plants have shut down four times due to poor water quality, and in 2022, the desalination plant had to be reactivated to cope with sediment overload. This is a pressing issue that affects us all. Read more in the ABC story. #HousingCrisis #WaterQuality #EnvironmentalImpact #SustainableConstruction #BrisbaneRiver #Brisbane #Queensland #GriffithUniversity #CitiesResearchInstitute

🐦 Winter BirdWalk 🐦 On a crisp winter morning, ten enthusiastic bird watchers gathered for a delightful Toohey Forest bird walk, led by our resident ecologist and bird expert, PhD candidate Christopher Johnson, along with part-time twitcher Prof Cara Beal. 🦉 The chilly weather didn’t ruffle any feathers as our keen-eyed group spotted a variety of bird species, from kookaburras to striated pardalotes. It was truly a walk to crow about! We can’t wait for more opportunities to celebrate and explore the incredible biodiversity right in our backyard. Stay tuned for future birdwatching events! 🐤🌳 #BirdWatching #TooheyForest #NathanCampus #GriffithUniversity #CitiesResearchInstitute #PhD #HDR
