🎙 What’s the key to meaningful community engagement? Listening. Truly listening. I recently joined a discussion with Citibot to explore how elections shape local communities. One big takeaway: local governments must prioritize listening to constituents. Talking *at* people won’t create trust or inspire engagement. Before people feel comfortable sharing feedback or ideas, they need: ✅ A safe space to speak without fear of backlash. ✅ Opportunities to communicate in ways that feel natural to them. ✅ Enough information to form an opinion about the topic. Take this example: A senior resident unfamiliar with QR codes is unlikely to complete a survey available only that way. It’s not just about getting the message out—it’s about tailoring the message and the medium. Gone are the days when a press release to newspapers and TV stations was enough. Now, governments must: 📱 Meet residents where they already communicate. 🎯 Use platforms and tools popular in their community. 💡 Offer creative ways to engage people who don’t attend city council meetings or follow local news. This shift requires us to ask ourselves: Are we making engagement fun and memorable? Are we offering incentives, like unique giveaways, to drive participation?
