DCS Spatial Services has secured all-of-government access and distribution rights for updated imagery across major metropolitan areas in NSW. Captured at 7.5cm resolution from 2021 and 2022, the imagery update covers Greater Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong, Port Stephens, Picton and portions of the Blue Mountains. Accessing this updated, multispectral imagery will be beneficial for NSW Government and Local Councils in a variety of ways including: - improve Smart City planning and monitor urban forestry - track public works projects and monitor systems - faster and more accurate property assessment for suburban neighbourhoods - after wildfires, determine health of remaining vegetation and use for risk analysis. This updated imagery is viewable at no cost via DCS Spatial Services’ map viewers and imagery web service. These are accessible via our Spatial Collaboration Portal: https://lnkd.in/gPrzdNZc. NSW State and Local Government enquiries to access copies of the data via the DCS Spatial Services Customer Hub: https://lnkd.in/gq5JW-tW. Reference 'access to Sydney conurbation imagery' in the summary and our team will be in contact to arrange acceptance of terms of use and supply. This updated imagery was secured as an all-of-government licence through the Remote Sensing, Services & Equipment (ReSSE) prequalification scheme: https://lnkd.in/gYqSXtwx #DCSSpatialServices #SixCities #Imagery #Spatial #Data

For too long we have failed to adequately monitor our conservation interventions. The NatureSpace District Licensing scheme - regulated by Natural England, offered in partnership with 60 Local Authorities, funded by developers, delivered by the amphibian and freshwater NGOs - is not only the first ever long-term, landscape-scale, spatially literate, species conservation strategy, it is also intensively monitored - with all the data ultimately going into the public domain. Best for planners, best for developers, best for newts. #bestnotcheapest
Today, we submitted our annual report to Natural England on behalf of all the Planning Authorities covered by the NatureSpace District Licensing Scheme. The annual report to Natural England, our Regulator, contains information on all development impacts and all habitat compensation and monitoring, carried out under the District Licences during 2023 across: 📌 10 regions 📋 62 local planning authorities ✅ 508 authorised cases 💧 368 ponds 🌿 1,100 ha terrestrial habitat Annual reporting is a requirement of the use of a District Licence for great crested newts and is crucial to our monitoring of the Scheme. It ensures transparency and accountability - we are committed to upholding and promoting high environmental standards. A huge thank you to all of our development and infrastructure clients who have dedicated time to completing their reporting forms; to our compensation partner, the Newt Conservation Partnership, for all of their work in creating, managing, monitoring, and reporting on all the compensatory habitats; and to our teams here at NatureSpace! #districtlicensing #montitoring (photo credit NatureSpace Partnership)

On Thursday, April 18, 2024, the Bureau of Land Management announced the final version of its Public Lands: Conservation and Landscape Health Rule. The new Conservation and Landscape Health Rule will guide public lands management strategies creating a greater focus on balancing multiple land uses into the future. The new rule recognizes conservation as an essential component of public lands management, and puts it on equal footing with the other managed uses of America’s public lands. How does this affect mountain bikers? Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gg7PntV6

I can research reserves remotely, but I don't know what I don't know till I ask the farmer beside that place. In October I start a four month remote camera survey series of two Parks Victoria salt lake assets just east of the town of Mortlake in SW Victoria. They're called N16 and N17. (I truly think that needs an improvement). They have no official records for fauna apart from birds. My mission is to improve the data, so Parks Victoria have better knowledge of what inhabits these reserves. It's also an opportunity for me to build that public knowledge so that others in the area, like Mortlake College, can use that verified data to build any future environmental education programs they might want to. And gain funding for them based on proven fauna records. Last but not at all least, for the farmers here. The crown to farm boundary is right on the edge of the lakes in most of their circumference. So the salt marsh to water to pasture interface is very narrow. I have been visiting and scoping the possible locations for the survey sites on the crown land over the last few months and each time if I see the adjoining landholders or their staff in the paddocks, I've waved. Then on Sunday I met one of them on the roadside. A dairy farmer. Third generation there. My hand disappeared into his and that electric current that kicks like a hot wire up your arm came on. Its called 'magic about to happen' and is completely different from 'make it quick'. Long story short, we talked. I gave him my card, said why I'm visiting and what I will be doing and why. Because I understand that wondering that comes when a ute starts turning up on your farm roadside with a person with a camera. So I was keen to allay any concerns he might have had and identify my purpose in person. He must've liked the cut of my kiwi-isms because after we had discussed parrots and feral cat trapping he decided to help me. It's a very generous thing to not only talk about history of a place next to a crown reserve, but also to grant access to paddocks, a cuppa, and a toilet. In return I will do whatever I can to ensure this farmer and his neighbors and their families see what I see. To enjoy the knowledge. But also so that when the Federal Government Nature Repair Market metrics are released and farmers can start applying for certificates, they can chose whether to use what I have learnt to evidence what biodiversity their land supports in conjunction with the adjoining salt lake reserves. There's great things to be learnt about how biodiversity use farmed land. What farmers need is industry direction and support to help them uncover that data. Over the past several years, a team of beaver scientists and Google engineers have been training a Machine Learning algorithm to automatically detect beaver dams and ponds on satellite imagery. The algorithm was given more than 13,000 landscape images with beaver dams from seven western states, along with some 56,000 dam-less locations. It categorised the landscape accurately 98.5 percent of the time (https://lnkd.in/eiXTBAc5). The Nature Conservancy and Google plan to run the model across the state of California sometime in 2024. The model could be used to estimate beaver numbers, monitor population trends, and calculate beaver-provided ecosystem services like water storage and fire prevention. It could also help states determine where to reintroduce beavers, where to target stream and wetland restoration, and where to create conservation areas. #earthobservation #digital #conservation #watermanagement #wildfires

One of the critical steps in developing a biodiverse ecosystem is to provide habitat for invertebrates. If you have a healthy population of insects lots of microbial life, birds, and small mammals will find your spot welcoming. #greeninfrastructure #rewilding #ecosystems #urban

Britain's first adder tunnels have been constructed to aid these fascinating venomous reptiles in safely crossing roads. 🛤️ The innovative design features two trenches with a cattle grid-like grate on top, allowing sunlight to penetrate and warm the tunnels, which is crucial for the adders as they cannot generate their own body heat. This initiative is a significant step towards boosting adder populations, which have sadly been in decline in recent years. Learn more about this ground-breaking project and its impact on conservation efforts: https://lnkd.in/eRyiaRwN #WildlifeConservation #Adders #SustainableLiving #Biodiversity #Innovation #EnvironmentalProtection #UKConservation #TunnelOfLove

As the population of Utah continues to expand, the pressure to develop the wetlands around the Great Salt Lake has increased, whether for houses, highways, or "inland ports". Using the models described in this article, we may be able to define and preserve critical areas as sanctuaries for migratory birds before they are gone. https://lnkd.in/gP8x697B
