We are thrilled to be partnering with Rosie Moss and Maia Wellbelove from Newt Conservation Partnership and Freshwater Habitats Trust to create wildlife ponds on Gravetye Estate with funding from NatureSpace Partnership. Measurements were taken so work can start in September in the valley below Home Farm. Ponds support more biodiversity than larger water bodies like lakes and rivers, so they play a vital role in nature recovery. Rosie was impressed with the health of the pond we restored in July 2023 and the emergence of water-violets from the seedbank. We eagerly await the arrival of Great Crested Newts….

As a national wildlife conservation charity, with teams based across England and Wales, it’s vital that we get together from time to time. Last week we held our annual staff away day at the Waddesdon – A Rothschild House & Gardens Estate in Buckinghamshire. This gave us the opportunity to don our wellies and waterproofs and venture out to the Eythrope Wetland, which we created in 2019 with River Thame Conservation Trust. The first wetland mosaic habitat of its kind in the Thame catchment, it is now home to 130 bird species. We also visited new clean water ponds which we created last year on the estate with the Newt Conservation Partnership, and which are already attracting wildlife. Thank you to the Rothschild Foundation for supporting our away day and helping our fantastic team get together to share ideas and further our vision of reversing the decline in freshwater biodiversity.

Bring back clean water! By restoring and creating small waterbodies, we can bring clean water back. Small freshwaters can be protected from pollution, even in urban or intensively managed landscapes. In our new #ResetForFreshwater manifesto, we’re calling on the new Government to bring clean water back to our towns and cities. We’ve already shown the difference this can make. 🌱 Clean water ponds we created in a farmed landscape in Leicestershire increased the catchment’s biodiversity by 26%. 🦎 Great Crested Newts were recorded at 58% of pond sites developed by Newt Conservation Partnership, a community benefit society which we run with Amphibian and Reptile Conservation. 🐦 122 species of bird, including Teal, Lapwing and Ringed Plover have been recorded at wetland mosaic habitat we created in Buckinghamshire with River Thame Conservation Trust and the Waddesdon – A Rothschild House & Gardens. 💦 New ponds created within or adjacent to Important Freshwater Areas through our Million Ponds Project and Flagship Ponds Project have been naturally colonised by some of the UK’s rarest plants and animals.
