DeLeon, Graham, Jamey M. B. Volker, Susie Pike, and Bailey Affolter. 2024. “Assessing the Impact on Gentrification of Senate Bill (SB) 375 Streamlining: Case Study of Sacramento, CA.” Findings, September. This study investigates whether the development streamlining provisions in California’s Senate Bill 375 (2008) – which reduce the review required under the California Environmental Quality Act for qualifying transit-oriented development (TOD) projects – contribute to gentrification. Gentrification can have positive and negative outcomes for nearby communities, including the disproportionate displacement of marginalized communities of color and low-income residents (Drexel University Urban Health Collaborative (UHC) 2019). We use case studies of three TOD projects in Sacramento that utilized SB 375 streamlining. We find medium evidence of gentrification from all three projects, with the Sacramento Commons project showing the most signs of gentrification. https://lnkd.in/gGbzX-aB.

Our conference season engagement ends with the #ConservativePartyConference in Birmingham this week. Our aim is to champion the profile of planning, promote its importance to the public and politicians and highlight the Strategic Planning Research and Public First research findings. Dr Victoria Hills MRTPI FICE FRSA MCMI CMgr chaired a discussion this morning on the role planners and local authorities play in creating sustainable, #climateresilient communities. Helen Fadipe MBE, FRTPI reiterated that when appropriately resourced, planning is an enabler, not a blocker to unlocking the economic, environmental, and societal gains of the country. She also emphasised how vital it is to get community consent to improve the delivery and quality of critical projects. The room, which included Cllr Sam Chapman-Allen, Chairman and Leader of Breckland Council Chloe Fiddy, Senior Policy and Engagement Lead at the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment and Cllr Richard Clewer, Spokesperson for Housing & Planning and Chair of the UK100’s Countryside Climate Network, agreed that more strategic planning is needed. Victoria then moved to a private roundtable chaired by the Institute for Government's Jill Rutter (pictured bottom right with Victoria), and attended by, amongst others, David Simmons, Shadow Parliamentary Under Secretary (HCLG), Cllr Martin Tett, think tanks, local government and the built environment on how England’s new homes could meet national needs while working for local areas. The discussion focused on four key policy areas where there are opportunities for new development to work better for local areas: ☆ Services/infrastructure ☆ Quality, design and environmental standards ☆ Affordability ☆ Homes in the 'right' places #Planning #ConservativePartyConference #CPC24 #Birmingham #Housing

As the general elections approach, the Landscape Institute has published vital recommendations for the next UK government. The Institute urges the next UK government to tackle the polycrisis the UK is facing through an integrated policy agenda that champions landscape-led and nature-based approaches. EDLA joins the LI in the call for solutions to the climate, nature restoration, public health, and housing challenges through interconnected policies that deliver positive social, environmental, and economic value to our country. Key recommendations include: - Leveraging green infrastructure to enhance climate resilience and ensure environmental net gain in new infrastructure projects. - Prioritising positive outcomes from planning by focusing on whole-life sustainability, landscape character, and design quality. - Linking environmental and planning policy to investment schemes to develop cleaner, greener, energy-efficient urban areas. - Promoting good health outcomes and reducing the burden on the NHS by investing in access to green space for all, particularly in deprived urban areas. - Making landscape planning and design skills essential resources within planning departments. #LandscapeInstitute #UKGovernment #ClimateAction #NatureBasedSolutions #GreenInfrastructure #SustainableDevelopment #UrbanPlanning #EnvironmentalPolicy #PublicHealth #HousingCrisis

The election is coming. 🗳️ Parks and green spaces deserve a better future. We urge the next UK Government to adopt our #manifesto and commit to delivering these three policy goals. 1. Access for All: Ensure everyone has a park or green space within a ten-minute walk of home. 2. Planning Reform: A planning system that protects and creates more new parks and green spaces. 3. Revalued and Reimagined: Increase funding for parks and green spaces to improve their quality and make them more multi-functional. The next government can unlock the full potential of these precious spaces and address the key societal challenges we all face. For people. For places. For nature 🌍 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dbyQfsvM

Excited to share important insights from the latest Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) report on transport preferences and place-making! 🚂🏙 Stephen Frost and Maya Singer Hobbs share valuable findings and recommendations from a survey of 3,006 adults across Great Britain: 🚌 59% see improving public transport as crucial for tackling climate change 💪🏾 Strong support for investment in buses (53%) and local rail services (54%) 🚲 51% back schemes to make walking and cycling easier What really caught my attention is the call for more place-based evidence to inform transport decisions. The report recommends: "Public involvement in transport planning should be increased, with a focus on understanding the needs of specific communities, especially in rural areas and villages." Aligning perfectly with our Connecting Communities programme! Thanks to funding from Gloucestershire Community Foundation We've been actively implementing this approach, particularly in our recent work in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire. Our team has been engaging directly with local communities to understand their unique transport needs and challenges - report available soon. We look forward to bringing this approach to Oxfordshire later this summer. Curious about how we're turning local insights into action? Our Connecting Communities report showcases our methodology and findings: https://lnkd.in/exkVaJSN A big thank you to Stephen Frost, Maya Singer Hobbs, and the IPPR team for this insightful research. Their full report is well worth a read: "Who gets a good deal? Revealing public attitudes to transport in Great Britain by IPPR" - https://lnkd.in/emZxM8mp I'd love to hear from professionals across the built environment sector—transport planners, urban designers, architects, community leaders, and sustainability experts - how are you incorporating local perspectives into your work? #SustainableTransport #CommunityEngagement #PlaceBasedDesign
