JCCC's Drafting Technology program recently welcomed members of AIA Kansas City, who presented students with strategies for building their personal brand and successful ways to start a career in the lucrative architectural field. Networking opportunities just like this are one of the many ways JCCC equips students with the skills they need to succeed. In JCCC’s Drafting Technology program, math, science, and engineering skills are essential, but working collaboratively and communicating clearly are considered vital skills, too. In the eighth of the 20 People to Know in Transportation and Infrastructure, we talk with University of Pittsburgh professor Kent Harries, who though often tabbed as a local bridge expert, Kent Harries’ primary job, as he describes it, is to “share the critical role of training and preparing the next generation of infrastructure professionals to meet the challenges of the next generation of infrastructure.” https://lnkd.in/e2mzNztb

Just a few of my favorite things: traffic and transit engineering, high school STEM outreach, and a construction site visit!
On March 11, our Phoenix office welcomed nine high school students from the Be a Leader Career Shadow Day program. The students attended a lunch-and-learn session on civil engineering followed by a safety briefing. They also explored Valley Metro RPTA’s South-Central Light Rail project which AECOM performed the final design and is currently under construction. The students saw firsthand how transit engineering plans are translated to real-life construction and had a rare opportunity to witness the various stages of construction of the light rail tracks and station platforms. This is the second year that our team has participated in the Be a Leader Career Shadow Day program, and we are looking forward to hosting more program events in the future! We would like to thank Tyler Besch for sponsoring this event, and Janet Yeow, Cedric Jackson, and Amanda Minutello for coordinating this fun-filled day of learning! At AECOM, we are committed to supporting initiatives that encourage students to pursue STEM careers. #AECOM #Transportation #Transit #Engineering #STEM #SustainableLegacies

Leaving good tracks is not just about technical accuracy; it's also about knowledge transfer and professional responsibility. Detailed records ensure that future engineers can understand the rationale behind design choices, facilitating continuous improvement and innovation in the field. It also reflects a commitment to excellence and accountability, qualities that are indispensable in #engineering. How do you ensure that you're leaving comprehensive and clear tracks of your work, especially in an era where technology is rapidly changing the landscape of engineering practices?
Words of Wisdom Wednesdays, 01/24/2024 “Always leave good tracks of your work. You never know when you will be asked to review what you have designed years later.” -John Markel, P.E., Civil / Structural Engineer, Smoky Valley John received this great advice from a professor at The University of Kansas and it’s stuck with him throughout his career. I feel that in today’s hyper-electronic age, it’s all-to-easy to zip through the details with computer programs and other tools that aid in our engineering design activities. While I love the time saved, it’s imperative that we engineers still leave a good trail behind with the key assumptions, decisions made, etc., because John is right – sometimes your design work comes back around! [Reminder for context: As I travel around the state representing the presidency of KSPE- Kansas Society of Professional Engineers, I’m soliciting advice from our members, allies, and supporters during my Chapter Visits. Therefore, each Wednesday I’ll share what I’ve collected, and I hope you’ll pass along the wisdom to those in your own spheres of influence!] #STEM #Licensure #Engineering

There are only two mistakes for mastery: not starting and not going all the way | Author, Agile, Lean Construction, Scrum | Director @ The Boldt Company | Assoc. DBIA
😎 1999 must have been a great time in Berkeley, California, especially among those attending the 7th Annual Conference of the International Group for Lean Construction. +30 papers published! Cynthia C.Y. Tsao, Ph.D., we need to catch up soon. 🤓 Here are some 💎 that got my attention with some snippets. WHAT IS LEAN CONSTRUCTION - 1999 Gregory A. Howell "Lean construction much like current practice has the goal of better meeting customer needs while using less of everything. But unlike current practice, lean construction rests on production management principles, the “physics1 ” of construction. The result is a new project delivery system that can be applied to any kind of construction but is particularly suited for complex, uncertain, and quick projects." Papers I'm doing a deeper dive into include: The Dark Side of Lean Construction: Exploitation and Ideology by Stuart D. Green Bringing Light to the Dark Side of Lean Construction: A Response to Stuart Green by Gregory A. Howell & Glenn Ballard See what else was published that year at https://lnkd.in/gVTCqzPS.

In the second of a series of insight articles on carbon reduction, my colleague Jimmy Barratt-Thorne discusses his research on how, for the same superstructure, the conceptual selection made for the bridge substructure can change the quantity of embodied carbon by a factor of two, with similar implications for cost. This article is based on Jimmy's masters dissertation from the Construction Engineering Masters at University of Cambridge, where Jimmy was supported by WSP in the UK to undertake this work. Read the approach of the case study and the main findings, plus the most surprising result: https://lnkd.in/e_j8AX7a
