Here’s how your typical #apprenticeship in #Germany, #Switzerland or #Austria results in us having some of the BEST 💥 tradespeople worldwide: 1. 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 🧑🎓 (around age 15 / 16) —> high school (Gymnasium) is NOT compulsory. Only about 20%-40% (depending on region and country) of pupils attend high school to pursue an academic career down the road 2. 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 ⚒️ (3-4 years): structured and nationally recognised apprenticeship program that combines practical work at a company (usually 2-3 days / week) and classroom schooling. Here’s an example of the skills a #carpenter usually has right out of his apprenticeship at around age 19/20: https://lnkd.in/emf98_-N 3. 𝗠𝗲𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 / 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗿 after a couple of years on the job one can go on to get a Meister (Master Tradesperson), focussing more on people and worksite leadership. Alternatively, a “Techniker” (Technician) is more focused on Project Management and Office work. Both are Bachelor Degree equivalents. 4. 𝗢𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 / 𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 In the Swiss / German / Austrian system one can always decide to go the academic route at a later point in time (e.g after 5-10 years on the job). I’ve met several carpenters / masons etc. that went on to become Engineers and Architects. I’m not saying other countries don’t have incredible professionals in the #trades and in #manufacturing. The big difference is: our system helps educate great trade professionals predictably and at scale 📈 while others rely on unstructured “on-the-job” learning. How do your countries manage the education of tomorrow’s #construction and #manufacturing talent?

Then let the latest numbers speak for themselves:   🌍 Danish manufacturing companies contributed DKK 113 billion to the state and municipal budgets in 2022.   🤖 Danish manufacturing companies have reduced their CO2e emissions from 52 to 19 tons from 1990 to 2022 when creating value for DKK 1 million.   💪 Currently, 13,000 apprentices and students are being trained in the industry. Good meeting this morning with colleagues from the Community of Green and Digital Transitions, which is part of the European Alliance for Apprenticeship (EAfA). Exploring approaches and practices  to provide relevant green and digital skills for apprentices. This could include the development of short module(s) that may be included as part of an existing apprenticeship programme. It was noted that agreed standards by interested providers and employers across Europe would assist in the development and roll out of relevant green and digital skills for apprentices. To enable this, it was suggested that several gaps needed to be considered including: ·        Awareness and promotion ·        Overcoming the digital divide ·        Identifying the required skills It was proposed that future activities of this Community would need to support, Networking, Best Practice, Access to facilities, Enhanced communication, and training resources. With the objective of providing practical solutions to meet green and digital skills for apprentices. Excellent challenges proposed by the Community, seeking input from all stakeholders involved, employers, social partners, education, and training providers.  Looking forward to future discussions and cooperation. Within TUDublin, School of Mechanical Engineering there is an Erasmus+ project exploring how Micro-credential and Green Skills can enhance career pathways, progression routes from VET and HE and apprenticeship in general.

Since its launch in 2023, the New Energy Apprenticeships Program has played a key role in building Australia’s clean energy workforce. And from 1 June 2024, more apprentices are set to benefit. Helping more Australians to start their training towards jobs for the future just like these apprentices at Electrogroup Apprenticeships and Training. The expanded program will help assist more apprentices and trainees skilling-up in sectors with exposure to clean energy – like automotive, housing construction and advanced manufacturing. It will also broaden the types of apprenticeships that are eligible, including designing and constructing hydroelectricity, solar and battery installations, electric vehicle maintenance and more.

The annual report on engineering in Ireland has another addition. It was interesting to see that engineering is seen as interesting work, well paid, with plenty of jobs, and important, but not for everyone. I disagree with that last point. I think engineering is for everyone; if you enjoy solving challenges, that is the biggest part of engineering.
