At Citycare Property, people and their safety are at the heart of everything we do. We have made great progress in the way we think about safety, and like many other New Zealand companies we are ambitious and continue to seek ways to lift our safety culture and the level of personal safety engagement at all levels of the organisation. We know we still have a way to go on our safety journey and we know it’s a journey that will never be truly complete - safety is something that will always be front of mind. Complacency is our enemy! We’ve reviewed our safety systems and cross checked that we continue to have a solid safety system in place. And we’ve engaged with all our leaders to build a common understanding of risk management principles and igniting a mindset and belief that all incidents and accidents are avoidable. More recently we have leveraged this common understanding of risk, by engaging with our operational teams on our six critical risks – those risks that could cause serious harm or even worse outcomes. We know the “not negotiable” controls we expect to be in place to help manage these critical risks – and we continue to explore additional controls that could help keep our people safer. We expect all of our Executive Leadership Team to be visible in the field and engaging in safety conversations. Visible leadership is so important to us to drive the shift in safety culture. We’ve doubled the number of site visits/safety conversations over the past year. We value our customers that really engage with us about safe working environments – whilst we want to play our role well, we know that we share the focus on safety with our customers. There are some stand out examples of those customers who really front foot their care for our people on their sites Rau Paenga Limited are a stellar example! We are also grateful for the resources and connections provided by Francois Barton at the Business Leaders' Health and Safety Forum. We value the lead that this industry body takes to actively encourage and promote opportunities to network and learn. We’ve also listened to and observed the work Ports of Auckland have completed to shift the full accountability for working safely to their operational leaders supported by their safety team – rather than the other way around! This is an ongoing part of our safety journey. We are always up for a conversation with other organisations that share our passion for safety. We are driven by improving our safety culture through collaboration and mutual learning.
