Natural Ground water recharge is becoming one of the major concerns in urban zones. Rainwater harvesting can actually help us overcome the water related problems. By following a step-by-step process—from setting city objectives to making legislative changes—urban local bodies can ensure sustainable water management through RWH. Developed for Peabody, Massachusetts, this tool forecasts future water levels and potential failures in the city’s drinking water reservoirs. It assesses the impacts of #climatechange, demand trends, and regulatory changes on water supply systems. The model can evaluate the cost-effectiveness of #capitalimprovements and various management strategies, offering a real-time look at reservoir and watershed conditions. With the ability to predict reservoir failures 12 months ahead, it guides cities in making informed decisions to mitigate risks through six different management strategies, balancing costs against the need to secure water supply infrastructure's future. Team OHM had an incredible showing at the Ohio Stormwater Association's 17th Annual Ohio Stormwater Conference, where industry leaders gathered to discuss stormwater and watershed management advancements. OHMers Alexandra Litofsky, P.E. and Karlin Danielsen shared valuable insights at the event, and today, we're highlighting key takeaways from their presentations: 🔹Alex focused on community engagement's transformative role in redeveloping vacant lots, showcasing the Invigorate Gallery project in Cleveland's Hough neighborhood - an initiative that illustrates how grassroots efforts and green infrastructure can revitalize spaces and foster environmental justice. 🌱 🔹 The key lesson learned? By showing up in our communities and forming connections, we can expand the impact of our work on a grassroots level, opening access to our industry and learning from our neighbors’ perspectives. 🔸 Karlin presented her Great Lakes Water Authority pilot study, demonstrating real-time bacteria monitoring using Tryptophan-like Fluorescence (TLF) to predict E. Coli concentrations, supporting watershed characterization and improving combined sewer overflow (CSO) management. 💧 🔸 CSO-driven E. coli loading has a unique response depending on the season, storm magnitude, and storm intensity. While the predictive algorithm showed promising qualitative insights into watershed dynamics, further work is needed to enhance quantitative accuracy in complex environments. Climate science informs us that wetland preservation and restoration are important #NatureBasedSolutions to confronting the impacts of climate change. Plants in wetland ecosystems capture (or sequester) large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2). Thus, wetland conservation is critical to maintaining healthy ecosystems where native species can thrive, and wetlands can act like a sponge to help regulate exchanges of greenhouse gases (GHGs) to and from the atmosphere. Healthy ecosystems have a positive impact on human health. 💚 However, as this article for Stormwater Solutions Magazine highlights, wetlands across the United States have historically been developed for farming, roadways, infrastructure, and buildings for the past 200+ years. In the 1970s, new Federal wetland regulation started to impact land development activity, slowly gaining traction in the late 1980s and the 1990s, making it difficult to select a site and permit a design. As the article points out, wetland consideration is highly relevant (we'd add "critical") in land site assessment and selection. ⚠ From the article: "For every project with potential wetlands impacts, following these best management practices, including working with experienced wetlands scientists who have local knowledge, can help your project head off wetland-related cost and schedule issues." 💡 Reposting the linked article below, shared courtesy of Terracon.
