European VC firms are still seen as “a boys' club.” A recent study by Ada Ventures revealed that VC funds owned by men receive 10 times more LP capital, despite evidence that mixed and co-led teams perform better. Another factor affecting diversity is that the hiring process in VC is influenced by the presence of women in current executive roles. Research by Paul Gompers found that the likelihood of hiring a female invrstor increases significantly if a firm’s partners have daughters. Moreover, women-founded startups generate more revenue per euro invested (European Women in VC 2021 Report), and companies with more women in executive roles are 25% more likely to be profitable. As leaders, we need to interrogate what's really happening when it comes to giving equal access to women in business. According to data from PitchBook, the venture capital gender gap persists. In 2023, companies founded solely by women received just 2.1% of total venture capital invested in US startups. Sure, overall venture funding has surged, but the divide remains stark for female founders. As investors, it's crucial to acknowledge that more work needs to be done to level the playing field and support women entrepreneurs in accessing capital to grow their businesses. Otherwise, we'll just be treading water.
