This road leading to one of the well furnished lodges in remote Namibia is one that drives livelihood, employment and growth in the locality. It also helps generate several economic returns to Namibia through ecotourism ventures. Conservation and wildlife is one important driving force here. Chimpanzees play a crucial role in maintaining forest health and contribute to human well-being through income-generating projects like tourism. This year’s #WorldChimpanzeeDay is a reminder to intensify our conservation and #sustainabledevelopment efforts to protect these species and restore the natural ecosystems they inhabit. In the forest belt of #Africa, spanning from Senegal to western Tanzania, there are four subspecies of chimpanzees: Western, Nigeria-Cameroon, Central, and Eastern. They live in diverse environments, from rainforests to dry savannas and cultivated landscapes dominated by oil palm. The African Wildlife Foundation is actively conserving these chimpanzees with major programs in Cameroon, the DRC, and Uganda. Eco-guards in Bili-Uere (DRC) and Dja and Campo Ma’an (Cameroon) patrol to protect these animals and their habitats. On World Wildlife Day, we confront a stark reality: since 1970, 66% of Africa's wildlife has been lost. 🦓🐘🦒 Statistics like this, revealed in WWF's Living Planet Index, are more than just numbers; they represent the silent vanishing of species from once-thriving wild spaces, like the eastern lowland gorillas in Kahuzi Biega National Park, whose population has plummeted by 80% due to hunting. Poaching and habitat destruction stand as the biggest contributors to this colossal loss of biodiversity. Climate change, too, is a major threat and is rapidly exacerbating the dangers already faced by Africa's unique ecosystems. Now, more than ever, we must unite against the forces driving this decline. The poll results are in on ’The biggest obstacle to realising Africa's full wildlife economic potential’. Insufficient regulation had been thought to be the primary barrier. However, the true tale of African wildlife conservation reveals a more nuanced situation. Historically, African wildlife conservation was centrally managed by government agencies. Recently, governance has shifted towards a more decentralised model with diverse stakeholders involved. Still, ensuring equitable distribution of conservation benefits between wealthier and poorer African nations and communities remains an ongoing hurdle. Wildlife populations are decreasing across much of Africa, largely due to habitat destruction and overhunting. As the human population rises, more land is converted for agriculture and development, displacing wildlife. Current hunting and consumption levels cannot be sustained long-term anywhere on the continent. Substantial wildlife populations still exist, primarily where robust legal protections are enforced. If overexploitation and habitat loss continue unchecked, the outcome will be further species extinctions and biodiversity declines. Additionally, productive ecosystems that many rural African communities depend on for their livelihoods and well-being will degrade. I am very honored to share that my article on the restoration of Malawi's iconic Chia Lagoon has been published in BirdLife International Africa Newsletter, Issue 11. Chia Lagoon, the largest lagoon in Malawi, spans 17 square kilometers and supports diverse ecosystems, including species like Banded Tilapia and a variety of bird species such as Ring-necked Dove, Lesser Masked Weaver, and Black Heron. It also supports the livelihoods of over 7,857 households, including farmers, fishermen, and bird hunters. Unfortunately, Chia Lagoon faces significant threats from unsustainable hunting, harmful agricultural practices, pollution, and climate change, leading to a decline in fish, plant, and bird species. However, hope is on the horizon with the launch of the Community Approach to Waterbird Resources Management project. Funded by the Darwin Initiative through BirdLife International Africa and implemented by the Wildlife and Environmental Society of Malawi (WESM) in partnership with the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) and the Microloan Foundation, this three-year project aims to reverse the damage. The project takes a holistic approach, integrating community needs, scientific research, and sustainable practices to foster a collaborative spirit among all stakeholders. It is not just about protecting birds but building resilient communities that live in harmony with nature. Through innovative conservation strategies and robust community engagement, this project promises lasting benefits for both people and wildlife at Chia Lagoon and beyond.
