My two weeks at Home Base in Boston have been truly eye opening. Regardless of branch of service, job specialty, or time in service, there are hard conversations and life experiences that we all choose to avoid. We often refuse to share our struggles or thoughts that gnaw at us daily with those who count on us at work and home. We're so hung up on what's considered acceptable talk in our corridors and workspaces that we fail to be mindful and take care of ourselves. For some, that mindset follows us home and we shut our emotional side down. Maybe how we act at work makes us feel more effective and productive as a spouse or parent. #Lies Or, maybe we can't turn off the worry of being viewed as weak out of fear of losing that trust we fought hard to earn. #TheStigmaPersists This random team of 14 that was formed on a Wharf in Charlestown overcame these military social norms. Our buried thoughts and stories became words that were spoken amongst total strangers who quickly became brothers. We related with each other in ways the first week that we sometimes can't with co-workers after years. #SadButTrue I'm home now and everything is just as I left it. The twins are still wild, my son is in a summer break state of mind, and my wife is as gorgeous and caring as ever. The only thing that I look to change is me. #NewOutlook I have so much work to do on myself, but I've been given the right tools and people who I know I can count on when I need them most. The TBI/ICP Clinic at Home Base is worth your time. YOU are worth your time. Regardless of your current status as active duty, reserve, or veteran, this particular team at Massachusetts General Hospital is here to serve you. Sounds like a solid program. I’m glad you were able to attend. You give so much to the military in 20 years and it’s great to find time to focus on you and do some personal maintenance. Thanks for the feedback on Home Base!

Well said Clay. I’m glad your are sharing your story and helping to bring awareness to an important issue. The only way we will collectively improve is by highlighting the resources they are available to our community.
