🚨 New case alert: Film Symphony Orchestra is about the #internationalisation of a Spanish-based professional symphonic orchestra with more than eighty musicians that exclusively offer cinema music concerts. 🇪🇸 Since its creation FSO had a lot of success in the Spanish territory and its founder is considering internationalizing its activity. The case looks at the different options available and the territories possible in the context of the music industry rules. 💡 Pankaj Ghemawat framework is used and the #globalisation of #culture is discussed in classroom. Will be used in my elective MB-555 Global Leadership and Management at Berklee Valencia this academic year.

"In concert halls, a familiar scenario unfolds with remarkable consistency: some of the audience will approach a classical concert with trepidation. They often mention the same things, “I’m not sure if I’m listening correctly,” or, “I read the program notes but I’m not sure if I could detect the intricacies mentioned in the notes.” I hear this a lot from patrons. There is a desire to follow perceived rules, to be correct and proper, and assume that program notes are the key to enlightenment and acceptance. However, people learn and listen differently so there is always a good percentage of people who feel a disconnect to a concert. Program notes, pre-concert talks, and educational videos cater to some, but certainly aren’t for everyone. The fact that so many people seek rules to attend a concert is restricting the very art that should be freeing them. There is no right or wrong way to experience a concert. Despite this, the desire for self-imposed rules persists, creating an environment where newcomers often feel anxious or as though they are missing something essential or going about the whole experience wrong. Last week, on International Women’s Day, Limelight published an article sharing the statistics I’ve been compiling on the diversity of programming in Australian Orchestras for 2023. The response I’ve received in the last week has been amazing, mostly from people interested to learn more, or curious “is it getting better?”…and one person who asked “is that the question that matters most in the arts today?” (On IWD? an article about diversity? Who knew? *strong eye roll implied*) Overall, yes, diversity in programming is getting better and there are initiatives across the country actively trying to address some of the imbalances. Missed from the article was the gender diversity stat from 2019 - 98% of works were written by men, so compared to that 4 years on we’re doing much better! There’s still a way to go, and there’s still a misunderstanding in some places on how to address the issues. Also missed in the article, commissioning new works is only part of the way forward. In my 2022 stats, there were more works by Beethoven, Mozart, and R. Strauss than all works by women composers combined. If an orchestra can play Beethoven, then perhaps they could play a symphony by Louise Farrenc instead. I curated a playlist that is just Symphonies by women composers – it’s nearly 33 hours long (and that’s just ones that have been recorded already!) As I stated in the article “I don’t expect the orchestral programming to change overnight, but I do feel the momentum building. If it takes more projects like mine – and others around the world – to keep pushing for change, then slowly and surely it will happen. The works are out there, they just have to look.” I’m so hopeful that with work by DONNE | Women in Music, Boulanger Initiative, Institute for Composer Diversity and so many more across the world, who keeping pushing, keep researching, and keep advocating for greater change, at some point we might see greater diversity of works on the orchestral stage. I’ll be publishing the full stats later in April on the Tenth Muse Initiative Website. If an orchestra of 120 players takes 40 minutes to play Beethoven's 9th Symphony, how long would it take for 60 players to play the symphony? All musicians that have seen this meme get infinitely frustrated by this. Clearly written by someone "not in the know." It's what a lawyer feels like when they watch Suits and Harvey Specter settles a case in minutes. Besides, we all know the answer: cut down to one musician per part for cost efficiency and set a metronome to its fastest setting. Duh. This week's article speaks on teaching with flow and protecting the time we have in the classroom. What is flow? It's that time and space we spend when we're completely caught up in the process and nothing else seems to matter. How can we push for immersion, even for a few minutes a day, in today's classrooms? We can continue building upon our routines, automate some tasks, and do what we can to protect our classroom time. Rather, we're working to create importance, connection, and engagement in as many of those minutes as we can.
