🌍💡The Future of Decarbonisation in Aerospace: A Collaborative Challenge #Energy Sector and #Aviation together🌍💡 At the UK Aerospace Technology Institute (#ATI) Annual Conference in October, leaders highlighted the unprecedented demands and opportunities that decarbonisation presents for the aviation industry. The journey toward net-zero emissions will require partnerships that transcend today's traditional aerospace supply chains. 🔑 As Eric Dalbiès, Senior EVP of R&T at Safran, puts it, "For the first time, 50% of our success is in the hands of another industrial sector." He was referring to the growing need for collaboration with the #energy supplier industry —whether traditional fuel players or new entrants focused on renewable energy sources like #hydrogen. ⚡ Hydrogen & 'so called-Sustainable' Aviation Fuels (SAFs) will be pivotal. If we are to completely replace fossil fuels like Jet A, hydrogen production and renewable electricity demand must grow massively. But it's not just about fuel; it's about the infrastructure that fuels aerospace's decarbonisation future. ✈️ James McMicking of ZeroAvia and Mark Bentall of Airbus point to gradual, practical steps in hydrogen adoption, like piloting new technologies and infrastructures, to minimising future risks and help build public and regulatory confidence. 🛡️ Ultimately, keeping passenger trust at the forefront is critical, and the aerospace industry must work hand-in-hand with regulators to scale the necessary skills, expertise, and infrastructure. As Airbus UK's Mark Bentall rightly noted, “Aviation is built on trust, and if we lose that, the industry is dead.” 👩🔬👨⚖️ This means growing capability—"up-skilling"—on both sides: manufacturers and regulators must evolve together and embrace the learning curve of new energy systems and technologies. The takeaway: #Collaboration, #innovation, and trust are key to making sustainable aviation a reality. 🌱✈️ #Decarbonization #SustainableAviation #FutureOfFlight #Hydrogen #Collaboration #AeroTech #Innovation #SAF #AerospaceLeadership #NetZeroFlight

EXTENDED DEADLINE: Focus Issue on Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) and Technologies for Zero-Carbon Flight in the SAE International Journal of Aerospace. Deadline: November 30, 2024 The pressing need to combat climate change and reduce aviation's carbon footprint has accelerated the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs). These eco-friendly fuels are crucial for achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in aviation. International initiatives and regulations are driving the industry towards adopting SAFs and other carbon-neutral technologies. SAFs, derived from various feedstocks, can be blended with traditional fossil fuels and used in current aircraft and infrastructure with minimal modifications, potentially replacing conventional jet fuels for all flight types. Additionally, the shift to carbon-neutral and carbon-zero fuels will necessitate significant changes in aircraft technology, propulsion systems (such as electric, hydrogen, or hybrid), and ground support infrastructure to enhance operational efficiency in aviation. Guest Editors: Yaseen Zaidi (University of the West of England Student Village, UK); Vilius Portapas, PhD (University of Nottingham, UK); Arnaud Didey (Neoptera Ltd, UK); Lance Smith (RTX, USA) Editor-in-Chief: Ravi Rajamani Instructions for submitting your work can be found here: https://sae.to/48EAt7b #aerospace #sustainability #research

We are happy to announce that the Alliance for Zero-Emission Aviation (#AZEA) – of which #Bologna #airport is member - has just launched its #vision on enabling the operation of #hydrogen-powered and #electric flights in Europe. The establishment of this common vision demonstrates the capacity of the Alliance members to work together and their commitment to make the energy shift towards electricity and hydrogen a reality in aviation. The report sets the ambitious objective to have 36 to 68% of intra-EU flights operated by these new aircraft configurations by 2050 and describes how they would progressively penetrate the market. It identifies barriers and challenges to be addressed through coherent actions by the members of the ecosystem, related to aircraft production and certification, aerodromes, airspace, regulation and standardisation. It confirms the capacity of aircraft powered with electric or hydrogen to reduce aviation CO2 emissions on intra-EU routes by up to 30% in 2050. AZEA is a voluntary initiative of private and public partners launched by the European Commission and supported by EUROCONTROL who share the objective to prepare the entry into commercial service of hydrogen-powered and electric aircraft. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released a Comparative Review of Aviation Net Zero Transition Pathways, which analyzes 14 leading roadmaps for achieving zero carbon emissions in aviation by 2050. The report compares the roadmaps in terms of their scope, assumptions, aviation energy demand, CO2 emissions, and the potential of various mitigation strategies such as new aircraft technologies, sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs), and operational improvements. The analysis shows that the pathways to achieving zero CO2 emissions differ depending on assumptions about technology development. Sustainable Aviation Fuels are expected to play a crucial role, ranging from 24% to 70% in CO2 reductions by 2050. The report also highlights the importance of technology advancements and operational efficiency, which together could contribute to about 30% of emissions reductions in 2050. The study emphasizes the need for market-based measures and carbon removal technologies to address residual emissions. Overall, the report provides valuable insights for stakeholders to formulate effective strategies to decarbonize aviation by leveraging multiple levers in different combinations. #aicraft #aviation #aviationnews #netzero #iata
