Powering the Future: Insights from the 2024 Energy UK Annual Conference We had the opportunity to attend this event last week, where industry leaders and policymakers gathered to discuss the future of energy security, affordability, and sustainability in the UK. Here are Julia Macfarlane & Adam Tonks' key takeaways from Ed Miliband MP, Claire Coutinho MP, and other influential voices: ➡ Energy Costs & Economic Stability: The ripple effects of global conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine, have shown how vulnerable economies can be to energy price shocks. UK inflation soared past 10%, with energy prices contributing to a third of this increase. Businesses and households are feeling the strain, with over £3 billion in energy bill debts. This financial burden underscores the urgent need for robust policies to protect the most vulnerable and stabilize the economy. ➡ Renewable Energy Leadership: As China takes the lead in renewable technology, the UK risks falling behind the G7 in clean energy growth by 2030. It’s crucial to accelerate our transition to renewable energy to ensure economic resilience and global competitiveness. Labour’s clean energy plans by 2030 aim to counter this trend, focusing on rapid infrastructure development and investment in green technology. ➡ Supporting Households & Businesses: The government’s Warm Homes Plan is a step in the right direction, but more comprehensive measures are needed. Immediate support for vulnerable households this winter, combined with long-term strategies to improve energy efficiency and reduce gas demand, are vital. Greater collaboration between the public and private sectors, alongside planning reforms, will be key to meeting the UK’s Net Zero targets by 2050. A big thank you to the speakers and participants for their insightful discussions, and to the organizers for bringing together such a pivotal event. Over the recent winter 2023/24 events, more than a third of the programme's Approved Providers white-labelled our end-to-end DFS solution, enabling more than 90,000 UK households to opt-in, resulting in reduced electricity demand of 111MWh. 🏠 That's enough electricity to power every home in Glasgow! We often talk about energy #supply in the race to cut #greenhousegasemissions. But #energy demand is something everybody can take action on — individuals, businesses and governments alike, writes Ana Botín of Santander in today's Financial Times. As co-chair of the World Economic Forum's International Business Council, she says this action is a win-win: helping the planet, lowering costs and boosting profitability and competitiveness. It could unlock annual savings of at least $2 trillion for the global economy if measures are taken by the end of this decade and even avoid the construction of 3,000 extra power stations, according to the IBC's report also published today. 📣 Our Innovation Sandbox is featured in the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario’s (IPC)Transparency Challenge! The showcase is a virtual exhibit of innovative projects enhancing government transparency or using open data to improve the lives of Ontarians. The first regulatory sandbox in Canada’s energy sector, our Innovation Sandbox supports pilot projects testing new activities, services and business models in Ontario’s electricity and natural gas sectors. Stakeholder support for greater transparency and information-sharing directly informed the development of the updated Innovation Sandbox 2.0, which features: 💡 Real-Time Dashboard: Our dashboard provides up-to-date insights on Sandbox activities, empowering stakeholders to stay informed about ongoing projects and top-of-mind trends. 💡 Enhanced Reporting: We’ve augmented our annual reports to include case studies and summaries of enquiries. 💡 Increased Access: Jointly with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), the OEB invited five Sandbox-supported innovators to provide an update on their pilot projects and discuss lessons learned at a stakeholder engagement session that attracted over 200 participants. We are proud to be recognized by this important initiative which encourages public institutions toward greater transparency and increases awareness of the benefits of open data. 🚀 Progress and Setbacks on Demand Side Flexibility 🔌 Demand side flexibility is the ability to adjust electricity usage and consumption patterns in response to various signals, like price signals and changes, incentives, or requests from utility companies. This helps balance supply and demand, maintain grid stability, reduce energy costs and support renewable energy integration. 🌍 Recent reports highlight significant progress in the accessibility of ancillary services for DSF, especially in Central and Eastern Europe. Efforts to meet the 2024 EU Clean Energy Package deadline have facilitated participation in these services. However, challenges remain for independent aggregators and new market participants. 🔬 European countries are actively involved in projects and trials to develop DSO flexibility. Leading the way, Great Britain and France have introduced commercial offerings. Yet, more incentives and better coordination between TSOs and DSOs are needed to enhance accessibility. 💡 In 2023, TSO spending on ancillary services decreased across 30 countries due to lower wholesale prices. Spain led the spending, reaching €1.59 billion. Regulatory barriers, however, still hinder DSF access, highlighting the need for reforms. 📈 Great Britain’s P415 modification is a notable development, allowing demand side assets controlled by a Virtual Lead Party to participate independently in day-ahead and intraday markets. This could lead to more efficient operations and reduced system costs, though regulatory inconsistencies pose challenges. ⚖️ Balancing Service Providers help balance real-time supply and demand on the power grid through services like frequency regulation. Furthermore, they offer 'free bids' to TSOs, providing additional flexibility. 🔓 The $388.1B market unlocked. Why should you care about the new EU regulation? Regulation for the Deployment of Alternative Fuels Infrastructure—AFIR came into force a few days ago. It’s shaping e-mobility (and not only) for the next few years. The global EV market was valued at $388B in ’23 and is expected to reach $95B by 2030. It’s evident that when new regulations come, new opportunities also come.  It will accelerate the development of many industries (regardless of whether someone is a fan of electric vehicles). ↓ What will emerge from this new law? Here are a few examples, as its many many more: ↳ Ultra-fast chargers: Denser fast-charging networks will accelerate the development of ultra-fast charging solutions (what we do at Hellonext ⚡) ↳ Smart charging integration: Grid integration and intelligent charging technologies will flourish as AFIR mandates them for public stations ↳ Payments: Universal contactless payment options will be required, but we will also see many different fintech/banking apps here ↳ Energy companies: Integration of renewables with EV charging will be crucial. Energy providers that offer bundled EV charging and renewable energy plans will be attractive. ↳ Urban charging infrastructure: Cities will see a surge in demand for innovative on-street and off-street charging solutions, including workplace and residential charging. I had the opportunity to celebrate this event with great industry leaders and experts. It was great to hear more about how it will look in reality and the predictions for the next couple of years!
