Winter conditions can make driving difficult – especially for autonomous vehicles. Researchers at Aalto University in Finland are solving the problem with A!ex, the Aalto autonomous vehicle, which is a normal passenger car converted into a self-driving car. The high beam light at night cause sun glare effect. High contrast light condition always a challenge for normal RGB camera.

I previously shared my work using a custom YOLOv8 model for object detection on KITTI and Nuscenes datasets with LiDAR data projected onto a bird's-eye view (BEV). Now, I have trained a custom Yolov8 model for front camera images and have done the visualizations of both the camera and LiDAR BEV model outputs! This allows for a fascinating comparison of how each sensor "sees" the environment. This can also help autonomous vehicles get a 3D view of the environment. It's all in the mix: sensors for autonomous driving 🚗 Autonomous driving requires a combination of technologies: Lidars, radars and cameras provide a comprehensive picture of the traffic environment. 💡 The video below shows a camera and a lidar in full synchronization: You can see the environment at the same time through the eye of a camera and a lidar. Lidars emit laser light that reflects off by objects in the environment and is then received again to calculate distances. 🚦 Light orange colors represent objects close to the vehicle; dark blue colors represent objects farther away. Each point (color point) is also a real point in the vehicle's 3D environment, so lidars build an accurate 3D geometry of the environment. 👉 The roof sensor module from #Webasto combines the various technologies and is an elegant and reliable solution for autonomous driving.
