On Sept. 28, Cleveland Clinic Florida caregivers joined together in the fight against cancer.   More than 30 caregivers participated in the inaugural Cleveland Clinic Florida for the Cure benefiting VeloSano event by walking or running a 1.5-mile loop at Tree Tops Park in Davie, FL — and volunteering or donating.    “Supporting VeloSano has brought us all together as a community in support of a great cause. We are all motivated by the same purpose — to support cancer research in order to save more lives and reduce the burden of cancer. Everything has a beginning, so we feel proud Cleveland Clinic Florida is now part of this very special movement that started many years ago in Cleveland, OH, giving hope to so many,” shared Zeina Nahleh, MD, Regional Chair, Hematology-Oncology and Vice Chief, Cancer Institute. Founded in 2011, Brakes for Breasts has raised more than $1.8 million for Cleveland Clinic’s Breast Cancer Vaccine research. During the month of October, participating independent auto repair shops will provide free brake pads with every brake repair purchase (customers will only pay for any additional parts and labor). Plus, 10% of the cost of each brake repair will be donated to Cleveland Clinic Breast Cancer Vaccine Research. Giving comes in many forms. At John Carroll University, Michelle Fowler, senior athletic trainer with Cleveland Clinic Rehabilitation and Sports Therapy/Sports Health knows the importance of supporting the mental health of student athletes. On September 17, Michelle helped coordinate a powerful event for suicide awareness, where student athletes gathered at the track in the early morning to reflect, share, and support each other. They walked two laps—one in silence, one discussing important mental health issues—after hearing from coaches and athletes who bravely open up about their own struggles. The event also provided the athletes with information about the mental health services available to them on campus and heard from Cleveland Clinic sports psychologist Matthew Sacco. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women. That’s why we have our mobile mammography unit to help bring mammogram screenings to those who don’t have access. Inside the unit, patients will find a waiting area, changing rooms and the same imaging technology that’s used in other Cleveland Clinic facilities.     The mobile mammography unit's mission is simple: to provide mammograms to those who don’t have access to the routine screening, which is critical for the early detection of breast cancer. The Cleveland Clinic Cancer Community Outreach & Patient Navigation team works hard to bring the mobile mammography unit to communities where its services are needed most. The team is also actively creating partnerships with organizations to create more opportunities for mammogram screenings. The mobile mammography unit currently primarily serves patients in Northeast Ohio. #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth #clevelandclinic #GivingDoesGood
