The African Development Bank Group published Country Focus Reports for 2024 and we have summarized the areas relating to climate financing in Southern Africa. 8 out of 10 Southern African countries are ranked as highly vulnerable to climate change and have low readiness, placing them among the most at-risk nations globally. Innovative financing that boosts private sector participation is highlighted as a crucial consideration for all countries. What are the key actions African players, led by governments, take to leverage climate finance towards the continent’s development objectives? To bridge the climate financing gap in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, there’s  need to explore better options for building out National and Sub-National Climate Finance Infrastructure, developing climate finance policies focused on the financial sector, creating transition facilities, and establishing an ecosystem of research and development in climate finance data management, measurement, and reporting.  This includes attracting private capital, innovative financing instruments, broadening the investor base, expanding the involvement of multilateral development banks and development finance institutions, strengthening climate information, and developing transition taxonomies. We hosted an interactive Climate Finance Roundtable on the side lines of the ongoing AfDB Annual Meetings in Nairobi. James Mwangi, Mary Porter Peschka, Rita Effah and I highlighted the fact that without immediate and collaborative action, Africa will not meet its planned Climate Finance targets. Collective effort from Public and Private Sector is required to meet the $2.8 trillion needed for Climate Finance in Africa by 2030. We not only require enabling investment policies but also innovative financial solutions that will help the shift from mitigation finance to adaptation finance. Financial Institutions need to build more tangible solutions now. Our research shows that for every $1 spent on adaptation finance this decade, an economic benefit of $12 can be generated. This is part of the reason we formulated the Guide for Adaptation and Resilience Finance. Developed alongside Multilateral Development Banks, NGOs, the African Development Bank and the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative, the Guide is a practical resource for investors, commercial banks, and other financial institutions to create a joint approach to Climate Financing.   With such a huge financial undertaking, mobilizing partners to access additional green and transition finance by leveraging the power of our global network is crucial. Africa Think Tank Summit Update! The Ministerial Session "Leading the Way: African Countries’ Innovative Approaches to Climate Finance Policy and Regulation" at the ongoing Africa Think Tank Summit, brought together ministers and experts who shared groundbreaking strategies for tackling climate change in the continent. The speakers highlighted the need for innovative financing models, such as grant funding to support project preparation and climate-resilient infrastructure in Africa. They emphasized the importance of affordable finance at scale for African countries, pooling risks for those most affected by climate change. One of the key takeaways from the session was the discussion on the importance of gender-responsive approaches, institutional transformation, and in-country coordination of funding priorities.
