#ClimateChange and #biodiversity loss are existential threats to humanity, with Africa bearing the brunt of their impacts. As a climate-vulnerable continent, #Africa faces profound economic, social, and developmental risks, exacerbated by its heavy reliance on natural capital and alarming rates of biodiversity loss. To reverse this trend, we urgently need substantial funding, particularly from #PrivateCapital. In response,#FSDAfrica in partnership with the African Natural Capital Alliance (ANCA) and Finance Earth, is excited to launch the 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 (CAPE). This initiative aims to support high-integrity, nature-based carbon projects across the continent, addressing the critical investment gap they encounter. #CAPE will provide: 🟢 Essential project development services 🟢 Transaction advisory support 🟢 Pathways to help promising initiatives reach financial close 🔍 Expressions of interest opens in early November! Two trillion dollars—that’s the estimated amount of private domestic capital available within Africa's #FinancialEcosystem, held across #pension funds, #insurance firms, and other institutional investment vehicles. This financial potential holds the promise to define Africa’s future. By tapping into domestic resources, Africa could be more self-reliant in funding her growth agenda. But how exactly does it do that? Here is Chinua Azubike, Managing Director and CEO of InfraCredit who spoke in our panel “Financing the frontier: Mobilising private finance across the capital continuum” We are proud to have sponsored AFSIC - Investing in Africa, a premier African investment conference, and joined leaders, investors, and visionaries in exploring and hastening investment across the continent. What a ride the last 6 months have been with 25 insurtechs and 15 regulators that participated in the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝗕𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗟𝗮𝗯 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 representing 16 African nations.🌍 This week we mark the graduation of the 2024 cohort with a demo day and the annual #BimaLab Africa insurtech Summit. A huge thank you to our hosts and partner Autorité de Contrôle des Assurances et de la Prévoyance Sociale (ACAPS) - MAROC. Day one of the demo day week started on a high note. We learnt more about the Morocco insurance landscape from The Autorité de Contrôle des Assurances et de la Prévoyance Sociale (ACAPS) - MAROC market organization team and Fédération Marocaine de l'Assurance. We visited two market players in #Morocco: AtlantaSanad Assurance and Chari | YC S21 | Ecom and Fintech apps for retailers in Francophone Africa to give the cohort real insights from a traditional insurer and an innovative insurtech in the market. We closed the day with interactive clinic sessions on gender and fundraising. The next stop is The BimaLab Africa Insurtech Summit on 31 October in Rabat, Morocco where we will put these innovators and founders on stage to pitch their businesses to global investors and ecosystem partners. You don’t want to miss that. #Africa stands at a turning point where #ClimateChange poses profound risks to its economies, yet also presents an unprecedented opportunity to lead in green growth. Mark Napier, our CEO at #FSDAfrica, sees this Landscape of Climate Finance in Africa 2024 report as more than an analysis—it’s a call for Africa to seize its moment on the global stage. By pioneering #GreenIndustries and investing in resilient infrastructure, Africa has the potential to transform climate vulnerability into economic strength. This report reveals how #ClimateFinance can be a force for stability and African-led innovation, equipping the continent to shape its future rather than adapt to it. Today marked Day 1 of the 4th session of the Africa Climate Finance Leadership Programme, an essential gathering of leaders from Kenya 🇰🇪, Tanzania 🇹🇿, Ethiopia 🇪🇹 and Ghana 🇬🇭 to explore the transformative potential of #ClimateFinance for the continent. Against the circumstances of global pressures, biodiversity loss and rapid social and economic shifts, this cohort of delegates focused on redefining #Africa’s role in the climate finance landscape. The session kicked off with thought-provoking discussions on the implications of today’s economic, social and environmental pressures and trends on Africa’s financial sector. We dug into climate science, addressing the urgency for African leaders to challenge the perception that financing Africa is "risky." The key takeaway from today’s session is reframing climate finance as necessary rather than optional for a sustainable global future. Key highlights: 🔘 Understanding global pressures: The financial sector plays a pivotal role in addressing biodiversity loss, impacts on coral reefs, and ocean acidification. 🔘 Implications for Africa: How today’s framing of “risky” African climate finance deters investment and escalates capital costs - while recognising that inaction may be the riskiest choice of all. 🔘 Science & strategy: A deeper dive into climate science and the financial strategies needed for Africa to build resilience and drive sustainable economic growth. Through this programme, in partnership with the University of Cambridge’s Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL), ESAMI and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), African leaders are sharpening their understanding of climate finance, equipping themselves to mobilise capital flows toward impactful, climate-smart projects - setting the stage for an empowered, climate-resilient Africa. #MakingFinanceWork #ClimateFinance #SustainableDevelopment #ClimateResilience -- Evans Osano, DBA, Sandy O.
