“Sterman and his colleagues calculated that it would take between 44 and 104 years for new trees to absorb as much CO2 as the amount generated by wood bioenergy that displaces coal. Despite claims that it helps the fight against global warming, he says, “our conclusion is no, it actually makes climate change worse”. https://lnkd.in/evYdWkuF Woody biomass for heat or energy destroys our forests eliminating active carbon sequestration, in addition to all the other vital ecosystem services. Burning woody biomass for energy or heat also pollutes more than coal per megawatt of energy produced when all lifecycle emissions are counted. The biomass industry harms the health of those communities who lose the forests, live close to a biomass burning plant, a “CHP” (Combined Heat and Power facility), or a biomass pellet production plant – usually low income, underserved communities – and in the long run it harms everyone. This industry has hurt communities across the South and is now eager to expand across the West, the Mid-Atlantic, and the North-East of the U.S. #stopburningstuff #nofalsesolutions #worthmorestanding #keepitintheforests #biomasslies #energy #cleanenergy

Brief explanation of the important reasons why biomass is zero-rated, and why it is the only sensible way to do it if we want forests to grow, resources not to be wasted and climate goals to be achieved. #Biomass #Netzero #sustainability https://lnkd.in/d7GZwWtU

This is the way to prevent forest fires, and by using biomass to energy we reduce the risks and we invest money in our forests. Our policy makers should learn from this experience...

Check out Solutions for Our Climate (기후솔루션)'s new report, which explores why #biomass is not "clean" and should be excluded from the global #renewableenergy target. Our recent analysis estimates that biomass for electricity in South Korea emitted approximately 11 million tCO2 in 2022 alone, which exceeds all the annual forest carbon sink enhancements the government has committed to achieving by 2050, effectively nullifying the government’s net-zero commitments in the forest sector. Ao much for this much touted false solution to #climatechange. And we released in time for #COP28 too!

📣 Everyday, we see large volumes of support, commentary and criticism of the role that biomass can play in supporting energy security and helping tackle climate change. 🎙 In order to keep informing the conversation Drax Group asked Jonathon Porritt, formerly Co-Chair of the Green Party, Director of Friends of the Earth and Chair of the UK Sustainable Development Commission, to do a deep dive into bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) and outline what he and others believe are the conditions that must be met in order for the technology to be 'done well'. 💡 Today, this 2.5 year project concludes and Jonathon has published a blog outlining: ◾ Why he wanted to work with us ◾ Some of the "knotty issues" behind BECCS ◾ The recommendations as to what must be in place for BECCS to benefit people, the climate and nature ◾ The role BECCS must play in removing greenhouse gases 🔥 It's 3000 words.. but it's very digestible and I'm sure next week will be another busy week for biomass and Jonathon provides a fresh and impartial perspective for people wanting to learn more! https://lnkd.in/e-ZTWeBu

The Government has pumped billions of pounds into subsidising energy production from burning forest biomass in place of coal, labelling it as 'low carbon' energy and therefore part of the solution to climate change. It isn't - trees need to stay in the ground and absorb carbon as part of the urgency of climate change mitigation. Crucially, cutting them down and burning them emits as much if not more carbon than burning coal. As the Government prepares to pump even more money into this high carbon hole, the recent NAO report touches on some of the flaws in the Government's biomass approach, but doesn't call out the falsehood at the centre of this taxpayer-funded climate change scandal. #biomass #climatechange
