Kwadwo Yeboah (PhD) Key Reflections on Urban Resilience: - Addressing urban resilience from a systems perspective, engaging all interest groups in the conversation; - Emphasizing the importance of monitoring progress to enable mid-course corrections for improved outcomes; - Bridging the gap between academic research and policy implementation, ensuring continuous and inclusive participation; and - Highlighting the issue of properties located within buffer zones and utilizing technology like Google Earth for tracking.

Finally, we are talking about heat!! Our cities are being designed to increase heat, not reduce it. Utterly reckless and irresponsible. Great article below. One reason is that most of us who are likely to read this here can escape the heat with ACs--which makes the city even hotter for those who cannot. And our real estate developers, in collusion with municipal officers, are eager to cut down every green space and put up buildings everywhere. Between water shortages, floods, air pollution, noise, heat, traffic, garbage and general ugliness, will we allow our cities to become increasingly unlivable and unhealthy? Or are we, the citizens, going to do something about? There are plenty of solutions. But implementing them requires hard work, and courage to oppose those who benefit from the problems. Good ideas. To add: 1. Greenscaping should be mandatory. This will provide both cooling, enrich oxygen and enhance aesthetics. 2. Use of Khus (Vetiver) curtains with a semi-automated water sprinkler with temperature and humidity sensor is far better than Artificial Air-Conditioners. 3. ACs should be banned with a global mandate with effect from 16 March 2025 with 9 months advance notice. Apart from being environmentally destructive they are also health and safety hazards. 4. We need to cut back on paved surfaces including roads. Switching from Private owned cars to Mobility-as-a-Service model will make a huge difference for health, environment and economic benefits. With every private car removed, 30 sq mtr of land space is released which can be used for storing more water (as precipitation will increase significantly over next 15 years) - recharging aquifers, wells, ponds, rivers and lakes; create space for more trees close inside human habitats; space for 'materials library' - where unused items are indexed and catalogued to be available as raw materials instead of being dumped in landfills. UNESCO and Chile will host the 31st World Press Freedom Day Conference dedicated to the importance of journalism and freedom of expression in the context of the current global environmental crisis. Their aim is to spread awareness and highlight the fact that the climate crisis not only affects the environment and ecosystems, but also negatively impacts the lives of billions of people worldwide.
