🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ Let's celebrate diversity and inclusivity in clinical research this month and every month. We recently partnered with Clinical Trials For All - an initiative to increase global clinical trial participation - and we are all aware of the improvements needed to welcome more people into this space. Many populations are poorly represented in clinical research, and recurring themes include ethnicity, socioeconomic background, gender identity, sexuality and combinations of these. Practical things we can do to welcome more people into research? Here are just a few: ❤️ Use more inclusive language - make people aware that you see them and that you understand them 🧡 Improved staff training - including cultural awareness and empathy training 💛 Correct terminology around 'Sex' and 'Gender/Gender Identity' - allow people to express themselves as much or as little as they want 💚 Consider outdated language and behaviours - things have moved on - are you being abrasive, unwelcoming or rude without meaning to? 💙 Include additional criteria/options/selectors that don't ringfence participants into submitting incorrect data just to 'fit into a tick box' when they don't 💜 Include varied pronoun options where appropriate 💭 Have you taken part in a trial? This month, we’d like to reflect on the significance of AANHPI Heritage Month. The rich tapestry of cultures, traditions, and resilience that define the AANHPI experience in the United States is truly remarkable. Let's celebrate the diversity within the AANHPI community and recognize the unique histories, values, and challenges that each ethnicity brings. Despite the obstacles faced, progress is being made in addressing the healthcare needs of AANHPI populations. From data disaggregation to cultural competency training, efforts are underway to improve healthcare access and understanding for AANHPI individuals. As I reflect on the success of our 2024 Clean-up day initiative, some recurring thoughts are coming to my mind: 1)  The responsibility to contribute   Positive examples are crucial to inspire people towards a noble goal and, as a public entity, it is a must to role-model initiatives aimed at building a more sustainable world, 2) Contributing while bonding as a team Beyond the intrinsic social value, getting together as team for a noble cause creates stronger team bonding, a crucial element to enjoy our daily work and withstand challenges that the business environment can sometimes create, 3.  The importance to visualize your objective As we are fortunate to live in one of the cleanest countries in the world, we were not really sure whether we would have had anything to clean up 😀. However, once we actively looked for it, we found a lot of misplaced trash! (including shoes and other curious items). Jokes aside, for me this represents a simple lesson: if you do not know what you are looking for, you are never going to find it. Being clear on our objectives is crucial to achieve them. If not, good ideas and great opportunities can slip away just because we were not aware these were the right one for us. In conclusion, I would like to thank all the participants for their commitment, hard work in a very hot day and above all, to make the atmosphere light and fun!
