As a qualified medical doctor and practitioner of Ecological Medicine, Dr Jenny Goodman has been helping people to improve their health for over 20 years.
If anyone knows about real food, it’s the Italians. So it’s perhaps not surprising that it is Italy that is moving to ban lab-grown meat. Lab-grown ‘meat’ (grown in steel vats, and steel is 14% nickel, so we’re looking at toxic metal contamination right off) is going to be another needless, high-tech, ultra-processed junk food. Make no mistake, the move to growing ‘meat’ in the lab is all about a new source of profit, not about saving the planet or about animal welfare. The animal welfare solution is to eat much less meat, so that what little we do eat comes only from humanely-reared, free-range, open-air, organically farmed animals. Of course, we should boycott factory-farmed meat, it is cruel as well as toxic, but factory-grown protein is not the answer. It is extremely odd for me to find myself agreeing with Italy’s right-wing government about anything, but there you go – strange times make for strange bedfellows. By the way, the best book I know about why good farming, not hideous synthetic pseudo-meat, is the solution, is by Chris Smaje, and it’s called “Saying No to a Farm-Free Future”. Highly recommended. https://lnkd.in/eXA79Eie #Farming #GoodFarming #LabGrownMeat #DrJennyGoodman #StayingAliveInToxicTimes #EcologicalMedicine #Health #Wellbeing #Seasonal #Reading #Books #Food #Light #Toxic #Nature #Ecology #SayingNoToAFarmFreeFuture #ChrisSmaje

There are those who aren't, or less, happy about the developing cultivated meat industry. The nascent industry faces a public relations challenge amidst a campaign raising concerns about its environmental impact, animal welfare implications, and scientific legitimacy. Critics, spearheaded by the Center for the Environment and Welfare, present various arguments against the technology, including potential energy and water demands, the lack of conclusive data on animal welfare benefits, and questions surrounding the regulatory oversight of novel cell culture protocols. Industry proponents, however, counter these assertions by highlighting potential environmental advantages over traditional meat production, citing reduced land use and greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, they emphasize the ongoing animal welfare research within the field and point to the rigorous safety assessments conducted by regulatory bodies. The Welfare Footprint Project has contributed a chapter to the recently published book, "Cultivated Meat to Secure Our Future: Hope for Animals, Food Security, and the Environment." This book explores how cultivated meat can lessen our reliance on traditional animal farming, which often falls terribly short in ensuring animal welfare. Our chapter, titled "Cultivated Meat Safety - Can it Prevent Pandemics?", draws on the past experience of our directors Wladimir J. Alonso and Cynthia Schuck-Paim in the field of global health. It explores the significant potential of cultivated meat as a key non-pharmaceutical strategy to mitigate global health risks associated with modern animal agriculture. I mostly troll the Meat Management page, but am also a Co-Founder of Vegan Food Group, the Managing Director at Veg Capital and a Co-Founder of Veganuary.
'The scale of humanity’s meat consumption is enormous. 360 million tonnes of meat every year. This number is so large that I find it impossible to comprehend. What helps me to make these numbers more relatable is to turn them from the weight of meat to the number of animals and from the yearly total to the daily number. This is what I have done in the graphic below. It shows how many animals are slaughtered on any average day. About 900,000 cows are slaughtered every day. If every cow was 2 meters long, and they all walked right behind each other, this line of cows would stretch for 1800 kilometers. This represents the number of cows slaughtered every day. For chickens, the daily count is extremely large – 202 million chickens every day. To comprehend the scale, it is better to bring it down to the average minute: 140,000 chickens are slaughtered every minute. The number of fish killed every day is very uncertain. I discuss this in some detail at the end of this article. But while the uncertainties are large, it is clear that the number of fish killed is large: certainly, hundreds of millions of fish are killed every day. If you believe that the slaughter of animals causes them to suffer and attribute even a small measure of ethical significance to their suffering, then the moral scale of this reality is immense.' - Max Roser, Our World In Data https://lnkd.in/eff7DiDH
