"The key for decision-makers is to focus less on what newsroom senstivities, or even social media pressures, may demand, and more on what readers, listeners, viewers and users deserve. That remains our lodestar— or at least it should." https://lnkd.in/eyw9SisT

A must read on the new rules of media from Kyle Chayka. Here are my fav three takeaways: "Locality and specificity are good things and offer ways to preserve meaning in the increasingly contextless internet. You have to remain tied to your own digital geography or the scope of a specific viewpoint. An audience wants to feel like an in-group, like they’re in on the joke, even if that joke is just that the mayor of New York sucks." "Broadcast on every channel, at least if you want to intensify your personality cult: text, livestream, video, audio." "Make sure you know why you’re doing something, especially if you’re a publisher or brand and you have limited bandwidth and / or resources. Your print magazine has a blog? Why? What is that accomplishing? Is it even good or does it make you look bad? Define your goals, inspect them thoroughly and be able to have an honest answer about why you want them."

Hey PR people 👋 Curious to know what you think! In the future, could you see yourself pitching live news streamers? 🤔 A new study revealed that platforms, like Twitch, YouTube, and TikTok, are redefining what "live" news is, in ways that are "incredibly important" to the future of journalism. Streamers are "defying journalistic conventions to engage deeply with audiences, 'co-constructing' truth and trust away from traditional news organizations." It seems like viewers now prefer live reactions and community engagement over traditional talking heads. This shift is creating a more interactive and transparent news landscape. On the PR side, I'm not sure if I'll be adding streamers to my pitch lists just yet, but I might have to soon. You can also learn more about the study here: https://lnkd.in/gMsmVReb

Remember when the news focused on objective stories about people and events that created impact? Today, it often feels like the news is about itself—anchors' remarks, guest appearances, viral tweets, biased headlines, and endless clickbait. In 2024, a record percentage of stories centered on the news industry and its personalities rather than the events shaping the world. Mediaite's "75 Most Influential in News Media 2024" list offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolving landscape of influence in media. For the first time, it captures the breadth of today’s ecosystem—from traditional news anchors and reporters to podcast hosts, streaming personalities, and digital creators shaping public opinion in real time. What sets this list apart is its acknowledgment of the shifting power of platforms. It goes beyond cable and broadcast to highlight the growing influence of podcasts, streaming services, and alternative media outlets. For media companies the shift is clear: audiences are now active participants and influence in media is no longer confined to a single format or channel. Instead it spans multiple platforms and perspectives, reflecting the cross-platform, multi-dimensional nature of today’s media landscape. In this new reality trust must be earned and audience relationships must be nurtured. How can companies adjust their goals, priorities, investments, and capabilities to embrace this change quickly and effectively? https://lnkd.in/ewgakQ9h

This continues being the biggest threat facing legacy media outlets: that they spend years building up the personal brands of their star journalists, only for those journalists to break off and drive their audiences onto their own independent media platforms. And it seems clear that Substack is the biggest beneficiary of this dynamic. The platform has created clear network effects that help creators grow their audiences. I'm sure it wasn't lost on Jennifer Rubin that there are already huge publications on Substack that align with her own work -- The Bulwark, Zeteo, Meidas Touch -- and it'll be much easier to cross-pollinate audiences with those publications if they share the same network. https://lnkd.in/esJ7cRES
