Since the introduction of the government's Temporary Development Contribution Waiver Scheme, an additional 8,878 residential units were commenced between March 2023 and February 2024 compared to the preceding 12-month period. Due to expire on 24 April, Savills Ireland is today advocating for an extension of the scheme for at least another year. Given prevailing high construction costs, high interest rates, and systemic planning challenges and delays, this extension will support the delivery of more homes by allowing for the realistic timelines required for large-scale developments. In the past week I've attended three great conferences - of different complexions and different cohorts - on the challenges of delivering housing, and particularly affordable housing, in the UK. - Architects' Action for Affordable Housing's workshop to agree priorities to take to the new Labour Government. - Housing Today's Building The Future Conference - where HAs and experts discussed the challenges in delivering new affordable housing and maintaining and improving their existing stock. - London Real Estate Forum - which saw panels tackle the government's ambition (or perhaps dream!) to deliver a whopping 1.5 million new homes within the next Parliament. What was so interesting from my perspective was seeing these three very different groups - architects and designers, affordable housing providers and local authorities, and funders and developers - address these issues from their own perspectives. No one could mistake the challenges we face as an industry, nor the hopes we have to meet them. Across the three conferences, one phrase came up again and again. By the architects under Chloë Phelps' chairing; and spoken by Graham Kauders of EDAROTH UK and by Fiona Fletcher Smith of L&Q: HOUSING (AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING) IS INFRASTRUCTURE. Having a home - one which is affordable and safe to live in - is a right everyone should enjoy. By designating housing as national infrastructure - with the recognition and central funding that comes with it - the government can set a clear shift in approach and tone. It may be the only way our industry can deliver its target of 1.5m homes. Here's hoping. Jestico + Whiles

This is a good example of unused and unloved brownfield land being put to housing use in the most wonderful of settings in Gorton. There is no need to build on greenbelt before we explore these sorts of sites, and there are many.
Our proposed newbuild residential scheme in Gorton has been featured in Place North West. https://lnkd.in/dNTx_Twu

As London Build approaches an end, we’re thrilled with the positive response to our land-finding service and its potential to unlock opportunities for land development, vital to the UK. Yesterday’s panel, Delivering the UK’s Housing Targets: Effective Collaboration Between Government and Housebuilders, brought together industry leaders to discuss the challenges in achieving housing goals. 📰Key takeaways included a call for the industry to embrace more Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), sustainable retrofitting, and private sector backing for local authorities to address delays and skill gaps. SME developers face unique hurdles, but collaboration, innovation, and investment were highlighted as critical solutions. While the panel concluded there is no “silver bullet” for the complex challenges our sector faces, collaboration, innovation, and investment are key to unlocking the solutions we need—and they are within reach. We’re pleased that our Planning Engagement Programme is already helping bridge these gaps and support local authorities in delivering better outcomes. 👉To learn more about this multi-faceted programme of local authority planning support, visit our website: https://lnkd.in/gwBjstNb London Build was a hub of discussion, on the most pivotal, cutting-edge issues facing our industries and the innovative solutions driving progress. We’re proud to play a key role in this conversation and look forward to sharing more insights in the days and weeks ahead.
