Why Is the Juneteenth Flag Red, White, and Red? While June 19 didn't become a federal holiday until 2021, the Juneteenth colors and flag have been recognized for more than 20 years. The official Juneteenth flag features red, white, and blue, with two stars: one five-pointed and one bursting. The Juneteenth flag, designed by activist Ben Haith in 1997, was first displayed at Boston's John Eliot Square District. The initial design featured sunbursts and flaming candles. Haith, who also founded the National Juneteenth Celebration, finalized and copyrighted the current design in 2000, with contributions from Lisa Jeanne Graf. The flag incorporates red, white, and blue colors from the American flag, symbolizing that all enslaved people and their descendants are American. Its central elements include a bursting star of freedom and an arc representing a new horizon of opportunity for Black people. The blue symbolizes the sky, while the red represents the bloodshed by enslaved Black Americans.
