Policy advocacy on climate change requires legislation and promotion of actions and initiatives to mitigate and adapt to climate change. To ensure effectiveness, the government should engage public participation which will lead to policies that can be implemented. It is a collective responsibility that can lead to reliable outcome and hence the resilience to climate change problems. #ClimateAction

#Environment and justice advocacy group, the Network for Environment and Climate Justice (NECJ) has called on the government and development partners to protect and promote all #humanrights for #victims of Cyclone Idai. A total of 279 individuals were declared missing since the cyclone hit Chimanimani District in 2019.In a statement, the #advocacy group said the government should ensure advancement of civil and political rights in the wake of natural disasters. “It is critical for the #government and #development partners to ensure that affected #communities have the necessary capacity to adapt to climate change particularly those that are most #vulnerable . There is need to devote resources towards the realization of socialization, economic and cultural rights of these.

As lawyers, we must understand and explore international legal avenues to demand accountability. On 13 March 2020, 16 young Montanans, then aged between 2 and 18, filed a lawsuit alleging that Montana was violating their constitutional rights to a healthy environment, safety, health and happiness by supporting an energy system that is dependent on fossil fuels. That lawsuit led to the first constitutional climate trial in US history. On 4 August 2023, the Montana state court handed down a landmark ruling in favour of the young Montanan climate activists: Held v Montana.
