DRONES AS FIRST RESPONDERS (DFR). About two dozen law enforcement agencies nationwide now subscribe to the Drone as First Responder (DFR) program, which allows them to dispatch UAVs to crime scenes in response to 911 calls. The drones hover overhead, allowing arriving field officers to gain vital situational intelligence to adapt their force posture and armed tactics accordingly. DFR has been shown to close 911 calls faster, reducing police operational costs, while minimizing casualties to officers and suspects alike. Why aren't more departments adopting the DFR program?

Vice President of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships | Homeland Security & Cybersecurity | Securing a more drone-empowered future
Alabama is taking a tough stance against drone misuse with a new law making it a Class C felony to operate a drone over a prison. This comes in response to a surge in contraband smuggling attempts via drone, with incidents nearly tripling from 2022 to 2023. The new law aims to deter such activity with the potential for 10 years in prison and hefty fines, along with the seizure of the drones used. While this issue isn't unique to Alabama, its proactive approach sets a strong precedent for ensuring the safe and responsible use of drone technology throughout the US and beyond. Size Don’t Matter When I first started working on this drone feature, I thought to myself, are we going to show another drone that’s just moving up and down, left and right. How different would this drone be compared to others? We went for a number of recce to understand how this drone actually works. Yes, we do have our own “study visits” because it’s important that we know what we are showing. Weighing approximately 350g, this drone sends an important message to us, “Size Don’t Matter”! Beyond size, what is important is its capabilities. This drone is impressive, manoeuvring at a considerable speed, making sharp turns and scanning and looking out for threat. The operators are equally competent too, they operated the drone as if they know it inside out.
