Fear, others' as as well as your own, will put blockers in your path to fulfilling your mission. Very early in my tenure as NASA administrator, I faced a myriad of challenges, including severe budget constraints, technical hurdles and schedule performance issues. There was a massive dip in confidence among our team and our supporters in Congress. This period was challenging, especially when Congress questioned NASA’s capability to fulfill its commitments to human exploration and scientific research. Most days I was overworked, tired and pissed off. During this time, I was inspired by a drawing and note from an 11-year-old student named Amanda. She had a simple yet profound message, “You will never know unless you go” above a drawing of a rocket ship heading toward a planetary body. It made me remember who I was doing it all for. Young people like Amanda, my children, my grandchildren, my friends kids and grandkids, my country that has given my family freedom. If you're pursuing "the hard stuff", just keep in mind who you're doing it for. #motivation #advice #space #newspace #aerospace #innovation #technology #deeptech #stem #science #nasa #spacex #business #tech #startups

Ever heard about NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory's quirky tradition? Before every space mission, scientists there munch on peanuts for good luck. This odd ritual started when a Ranger spacecraft successfully launched after many failures, and an engineer brought peanuts that day. It highlights something profound – even the smartest minds fear uncertainty. We all have our superstitions, like lucky jeans or peanuts, to feel in control. We can’t help feeling this way. Afterall, fear of the unknown helped keep our ancestors safe. But when we avoid uncertainty altogether, we close ourselves to new possibilities. Scientists view uncertainty differently. When faced with a dark room, they search for a light switch. How do you navigate uncertainty? I've often said, "I'm intelligent, I'm just not well-educated." Reflecting on my journey in my accomplished senior years, this statement resonates deeply. While I may not have a wall adorned with many diplomas, my experiences have been my greatest teachers. From my 37 years at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, delving into lessons learned from space missions, to my adventures as the Space Pope in EVE Online and building mutant vehicles for Burning Man – each experience has shaped my understanding and capabilities in unique ways. Intelligence is about curiosity, critical thinking, and the ability to learn from every situation, no matter how unconventional. Education is vital, but it's not confined to classrooms and textbooks. It’s in the challenges we face, the mistakes we make, and the successes we achieve. I encourage everyone to embrace their own intelligence, seek knowledge in all forms, and never underestimate the power of experiential learning. And, to those employers out there, never underestimate the capabilities of an undereducated intelligent person. 🚀 😎 EDIT: See below comments for 10 examples you may know... #Intelligence #LifelongLearning #ExperientialLearning #SpaceExploration #BurningMan #EVEOnline #NASA

We got our first big break for low plasticity burnishing on a NASA project in the late '90s. In the nearly 30 years since then, we've made huge strides with our engineering efforts and the process itself in many industries, such as aerospace, power, medical, oil & gas, and even fitness. Learn more about low plasticity burnishing and a few of our earlier applications in this NASA Hallmark video. #aerospace #nasa #research

LAUNCH "Welcome to The Leadership Edge. Today, we're talking about the word launch. I am always intrigued whenever I watch NASA launching a rocket into orbit to International Space Station. The launching procedure of NASA's rockets typically follows a precise and carefully orchestrated sequence of events, starting from T-Minus 10 minutes culminating in the iconic "1, 2, 3, liftoff!. In an organizational context, "launch" refers to the process of introducing a new initiative, product, service, or program to the market, customers, or internal stakeholders. It involves planning, preparation, and execution to ensure a successful rollout. Launching in an organization can mean: 1. Introducing a new product or service to the market. 2. Implementing a new process or system. 3. Initiating a new project or program. 4. Expanding into a new market or region. 5. Rolling out a new strategy or initiative. A successful launch typically involves: 1. Clear goals and objectives. 2. Effective communication and stakeholder engagement. 3. Thorough planning and preparation. 4. Coordinated execution and implementation. 5. Monitoring and evaluation to ensure desired outcomes. In essence, launching in an organization is about bringing new ideas, initiatives, or innovations to life, and making them available to the intended audience. As the saying goes, 'You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.' - Zig Ziglar. Start launching your organization today!" #hedgeconsultingservices #theleadershipedge #launch #NASA
