Where did all the angel investors go? Angel investor participation has apparently been dropping in venture deals for years. Data from PitchBook/NVCA shows deal and dollar amounts declining below. What do we think is driving it? Thought 1: More SPVs showing less individual angel $ but its likely still the same. Thought 2: Instiutionalized (lead by a VC fund) pre-seed rounds are more normal now. Thought 3: More early-stage funds with angels moving to LP? Share your thoughts below. 👇 h/t Jackie DiMonte for sharing originally 🙌

might this be the growth of more formal investors? when I got started, you went to corporations who might benefit from your initiative and "rich folks" who are now referred to as "Angels", a moniker I didn't entirely love, but now accept! After all, rich people isn't a great name for it either. However, the big Silicon Valley venture companies have only grown in their wealth and power and this has become quite trendy now with TV shows devoted to glamorizing the idea.

It seems that angel investors were very active in 2019, but the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted them. Many are still recovering financially, while others have become more risk-averse when considering new investments.

This surprises me. The angel groups that I know of are growing and investing.

I do think the growth of SPVs is a factor. I believe the Carta data also shows that pre-seed and seed investments have remained strong.

What about all the deals who rely only on angel investors and no VCs, are they counted here?
