Top stories today 📰 Weekend press: Former minister took energy firm donation despite security concerns https://buff.ly/4abs3DC In our latest round-up of sector coverage in the national media, former cabinet minister Simon Clarke is revealed to have taken a £5,000 donation from the developers of the controversial Aquind project. Meanwhile, thousands of Southern Water customers were left without water over the May bank holiday weekend and Thames Water has launched a legal challenge against housebuilder Redrow. ⚡💧 We know we need to accelerate delivery, so what’s stopping us? https://buff.ly/3Wvmih6 Standing almost at the halfway point of this decade, utilities face a steep climb to the summit of their ambitions for 2030. Whether it is progressing net zero, future-proofing infrastructure or protecting customers and the environment, the sector knows it has to increase the pace of delivery. Utility Week Live 2024 looks at how this can be achieved in practice. Here we profile some of the key challenges being discussed across our six stages. 🟢 Delay to SGN’s hydrogen trial ‘strengthens case’ for taking heating decision now https://buff.ly/3WBrakV The delay to SGN’s hydrogen town trial in Fife bolsters the argument for the government to bring forward its decision on hydrogen’s role in home heating, a leading gas expert has claimed. The government is currently set to make a decision on hydrogen for home heating in 2026. However, Dr Keith MacLean OBE, gas expert at consultancy Providence Policy, said that ministers should “bite the bullet” and make a decision now in light of the delay to the H100 Fife project.

You don't operate a charity, and you aren't spearheading a critical technology. So, what good will grants do you? 😕 Answer: More than you think. 🙂 Grants are available for upgrades that increase efficiency and reduce pollution. These upgrades may be to old buildings or to fleet vehicles. 🏭 For example, Texas has been offering grants to replace diesel engines in commercial vehicles with natural gas engines. The program is a win-win in that natural gas engines run clean, reducing pollutants, and cost less to operate than diesel engines, saving the operators money. 🚛 🚒 🚚 Another program provides monetary incentives to make existing Section 8 housing more energy-efficient. Upgrades like multi-pane windows, solar panels, and improvements to insulation may qualify. 💡 Other programs offer incentives to industrial manufacturers, homeowners, municipal districts, etc. ⚡ Such programs are often available at the state level. A quick search online will likely reveal a few. 🔍 If you require assistance in applying to these programs, we're here to help. Surely this is the kind of initiative local governments should be supporting to help the transition towards green energy. There are similar projects happening across Europe where battery farms are harvesting green energy to contribute to national grids. https://lnkd.in/ewxrGWem

We spent all of 2023 waiting for the FHS consultation, and now most of 2024 waiting for the outcome. It's great to see such strong support from MPs and civil society making the case that when it does arrive, it results in homes that are fit for the future. Mandating solar is such an obvious thing to do - if the government gets close to its 1.5m new homes target by the end of the decade, that could equate to close to 6GW of subsidy-free generating capacity. Add in battery storage, and the benefits of short-duration flexibility start to become very significant. #solarpv #fhs #newbuild #fitforthefuture #decarbonisation #flexibility #electricitystorage #electricity #heatpumps #futurehomesstandard
As reported in The Guardian, a cross-party group of #MPs and over a dozen #charities have called for mandatory #SolarPanels on all #NewHomes under the #FutureHomesStandard. The MPs and charities say it is essential that all new homes are built to standards that ensure low bills and minimal #CarbonEmissions, adding “We should not be building houses in the next five years that will have to be #retrofitted, at much greater cost, five or ten years later.” A recent MCS Foundation report found that installing solar panels as well as #HeatPumps and #batteries in new homes would result in thousands of pounds of #savings for homeowners. The average cumulative energy savings from solar panels, heat pump and battery storage installations on a 3-bed semi-detached house would be up to £46,612 over the loan term of a 25-year #mortgage. Delaying this shift means costly #retrofitting later. It's time for the #government to act and make #RenewableEnergy standard in #NewBuilds. https://lnkd.in/eP-MjKFH

3m homes must install clean heating such as heat pumps this Parliament... One in 10 households – around three million homes – need to install heat pumps or other low carbon heating during this parliament to meet climate targets, analysis has found. A report by innovation charity Nesta sets out a plan for the new Government to boost clean heating, which it says would save the average family switching to a heat pump £400 a year on their energy bills. https://lnkd.in/edfey7h6
