MetroLab Network is a collaborative of cities, counties and universities driving positive impact in communities by putting science and research into city halls. Their annual summit , which is taking place October 1st-2nd in Washington, DC, brings together 150+ local government leaders, innovators, and academic researchers from across the civic ecosystem that aim to intentionally bring two vital public institutions together in partnership: our local governments and universities. On the heels of generational investment from the federal government, innovation and economic growth is a priority in regions across the country. As this moves forward, communities are also grappling with complex problems that require capacity, research, and partnership. This year, the summit will focus on “An R&D Agenda in Service of Cities” – or how local governments consider research as an asset, and how this can move forward step by step with the university community during this time of innovation and economic investment. Don’t miss the chance to connect with peers, share insights, and contribute to the future of civic innovation. I'm honored to be in the fifth issue of MIT's Science and Policy Review. Thank you to Siddhu Pachipala for interviewing me, and capturing my warm- to hot-takes of how we can think about what's next for innovation in cities: "The word ’innovation’ should be invoked less in attempts to stick widgets onto polls and more in steps to bring research into city halls to inform policy and improve services to people." https://lnkd.in/gf3_7MvS

🏛️ Many of the institutions we take for granted today were shaped in a time when society shared a single cultural narrative. It's worth taking a moment to think about how this came about. In the wake of war, the 1950s and 60s saw the rise of new technologies such as television and mass media, which played a pivotal role in creating a shared reality🔮. These media platforms were instrumental in bringing together even the most diverse communities, setting the stage for the institutions we're familiar with now. Never before in human history had such a mono-culture been possible. Then the internet arrived and shattered this shared worldview into countless pieces. The institutions born from a once-shared reality now face the challenge of a fragmenting mono-culture, harking back to the diverse nature of pre-modern humanity. However, today's people are equipped with digital tools that amplify their voices 🎙️. The voices of everyday people are rising against the backdrop of weakening institutions. Who will prevail?
