Today I had the opportunity to attend an event hosted by Futures Friends. One of the topics that came up was the concept of Rewarding Retail and the potential of retail workers providing head office with first-hand insights into the day-to-day life in the store. The discussion also considered the empowerment of retail workers, engaging them and showing both on a personal and business level the importance of staff working directly with customers. Fellow retail friends, how do you feel about this? Do you feel heard by your company? Do you feel your input is taken into account? Do you feel head office decisions are sometimes disconnected from the reality in the store? In my experience in different retail environments, I feel that the opinions of sales assistants are often not taken into account, resulting in many lost opportunities. I would venture to say companies spend more on mystery shopper feedback and other tools than on actually listening to their employees.

This was a fun piece I pulled together after multiple dinners with some of the West Coast's leading marketing and brand leaders. The conversations focused on the state of our economy and the trends shaping day-to-day brand and marketing decisions. The dialogue was honest and far reaching, and too good not to share. 2024, for many, is proving to be uncharted waters. We have been noodling with some of the top marketers in the country over the past few months. Insights abound in this great piece by Jason Cieslak. Small preview here: "AI: “This is the dumbest it will ever be.” There wasn’t a single attendee who didn’t have an AI story to share. Every organization is looking at AI, whether casually playing around or aggressively applying it to reduce costs. The stories of lessons learned abound, each brander sharing what not to do when implementing AI. While there are wild swings in the tools and appropriate applications, all attendees agreed that the speed at which AI is improving is profound."

Blink, and you miss it! It's already two whirlwind years since Mark Sloane, our paragon of organisation, commandeered the helm of our operations. Mark's role can best be defined as... ... an elegant dance between silky smooth processes and steadfast robustness. "What do you treasure most about your journey so far, Mark?" we prodded. Here, in his words, are the top three cherries on this delightful cake: 1. Having the opportunity to work with former colleagues from previous roles and the new relationships that I have established 2. The autonomy of the role and the freedom afforded to align the operations function with the requirements of the business. 3. I should really say meeting our commercial director, Daniel Hague, but that goes without saying! So the final highlight would be witnessing the development of the company in what has been a relatively short period of time.
