Developing new leaders is one of the primary roles of existing leaders, which is why we were excited to have three team members who were recently promoted into leadership share their stories with our Aspiring Leaders class. Our thanks to IS Manager Dallas Taylor, MEC Supervisor Tabitha Peck, and Card Services Assistant Manager Sarah Walker for spending time and answering questions for our panel discussion, and for Controller Andrea Turner for facilitating.

The Williamson Community Leadership Program (WCLP) isn’t just another leadership course. Want a promotion? Find a way to demonstrate leadership at your level. The easiest folks to promote were those that found a level of leadership they could apply at their level. This might look like owning work at an associate level. It might look like owning a feature. It might look like owning a community. Figure out your scope and be a leader. Don’t forget to document your impact though. Leadership will help you be promoted, making sure your manager knows about it will help to seal it.

If I had one piece of advice for CEOs, ELT members or “Leaders of Leaders” in 2024 it would be this: Work very (very) hard on the quality of leadership – pick the right people, onboard and support leaders to ‘world-class’ levels. Coach or remove those who show toxic benhaviours or who are not up to it – they do a lot of damage.

This is a simple definition of one of the most effective styles of leadership. This means all those who end up in service based positions, or who seem to support others while doing their regular work, especially when done well and with passion, they have the capacity to also lead well. Those of us who are seeking to grow leaders in your organization- take note. And if this is who you are at the core, this is why you continue to find yourself seeking or in leadership.

There's a lot of leadership advice out there, but for the most part, they gloss over the hard questions. For instance, how do you fire people without ruining their careers? And when do you step down from your organization? In Roy Dockery, MBA's The Art of Leading, he looks into these crucial leadership issues as someone in the thick of these scenarios. What are things you wish you learned as a leader? Share them in the comments!
